New Mexico Legal Aid is seeking a dynamic and creative leader to serve as Manager of our statewide Volunteer Attorney Program ("VAP"). This position requires collaboration with the Pro Bono Committees of the various Judicial Districts, the State Bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico Commission on Access to Justice.
NMLA, the State Bar and the Commission on Access to Justice are committed to building and maintaining one of the most successful and innovative pro bono projects in the country. The VAP Manager will work closely with the VAP Director, practice group and rural office managers, State Bar leaders, Courts, local Judicial District pro bono committees, individual private attorneys and law firms, law school faculty and student groups, and civil legal services partner agencies throughout the state to achieve maximum potential of pro bono initiatives for providing representation and other forms of legal assistance to low-income New Mexicans.
The VAP Manager will be responsible for collaborating with the overall function of the VAP, supervising (4) full-time-equivalent staff (statewide pro bono coordinator, paralegals, and community justice workers), working with project partners, Bar leaders and volunteers from throughout the state, and:

Lakeshore Legal Aid serves people living with low income, older adults, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free, direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.  
Position Overview: 
Lakeshore Legal Aid is seeking a dedicated lawyer who will advocate and litigate on behalf of low-income and senior clients. Staff attorneys will be responsible for representing clients in a holistic manner to achieve clients’ goals through advocacy including litigation. In addition to individual client representation, staff attorneys are expected to be active in the community through participation in outreach and community organizations. Staff attorneys will treat clients, co-workers, and others with dignity and respect. 
Qualifications: 
<ul>
<li>Graduated from an accredited law school. </li>
<li>Spanish language skills are preferred, but not required, for this position.</li>
<li>Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan, or an application at the first opportunity for admission by reciprocity, or by taking the first available bar exam. </li>
<li>Demonstrated interest in the area of poverty law and working with low- income individuals. Able to be empathetic and understand the diverse clients of the poverty community. </li>
<li>Ability to deal effectively with all people under difficult circumstances. </li>
<li>Demonstrable skills in litigation, advocacy, interviewing, and drafting legal documents. </li>
<li>Understand and comply with the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct. </li>

General Task Areas

<li>Provide timely civil legal services to low-income and senior clients and client groups through representation in trial courts, appellate courts and other forums, through litigation, advice, negotiation, drafting and review of legal documents, referrals and administrative advocacy. </li>
<li>Serve the clients in a holistic and client centered manner and engage in community lawyering through a racial justice lens. </li>
<li>Update manuals and resource materials. </li>
<li>Develop an expertise in one or more areas of law, if required. </li>
<li>Promote and maintain civil and professional relationships with coworkers, clients, members of the judicial system, and members of the public with whom they have contact, treating all with dignity and respect. </li>

Job Summary
Advocates for Children of New York, Inc. (AFC) seeks a dedicated attorney to join the School Justice Project to provide direct representation, outreach, community education, and policy advocacy, to ensure that youth involved in the juvenile and/or criminal legal system have meaningful access to appropriate educational services during an unparalleled time of difficulty for them and their families. Given the evolving implementation of policies and programs for court-involved youth, the need for education advocacy by an attorney versed in the juvenile and/or criminal legal system is critical. This position will report to the Director of the School Justice Project.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Representation
<ul>
<li>Represent youth involved in, or at risk of involvement in, the juvenile or criminal legal system and facing school-related challenges, including suspensions, school policing, pushout, lack of supports, inappropriate placements, or unmet special education needs.</li>
<li>Advise families on their education rights in both community schools and correctional facilities.</li>
<li>Facilitate referrals for evaluations and participate in school meetings.</li>
<li>Advocate with schools, DOE administrators, ACS, DOC, and judges in Family, Criminal, and Supreme Courts.</li>
<li>Collaborate with defense attorneys, alternatives-to-incarceration providers, and other professionals.</li>
<li>Identify appropriate school placements and services.</li>
<li>Represent families at IEP meetings, suspension hearings, Manifestation Determination Reviews, and special education hearings and appeals.</li>
</ul>
Outreach and Training
<ul>
<li>Conduct outreach to professionals working with court-involved youth (e.g., alternatives-to-incarceration and detention providers, Close to Home providers, and court staff).</li>
<li>Develop materials and provide trainings, resources, and technical assistance to build capacity around education-related advocacy.</li>
<li>Create and deliver know-your-rights trainings and materials for students and families.</li>
</ul>
Policy Advocacy
<ul>
<li>Use insights from direct representation and trainings to drive systemic reform.</li>
<li>Draft letters, reports, and public comments on education issues affecting court-involved youth.</li>
<li>Participate in city and state policy meetings and testify before the City Council.</li>
<li>Collaborate with partner organizations to advance systemwide improvements in educational and vocational outcomes for court-involved youth.</li>

Qualifications

Compensation

AFC's current compensation package includes medical and dental insurance, with a plan option that covers full payment of medical plan premiums for staff and their qualified dependents.
