WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Quad Preparatory School is looking for a Lower School (grades K-5) Learning Specialist to provide students with personalized support in one or more academic content areas or developmental academic skills beyond the personalized support available in the Quad Prep classroom setting. Students who attend sessions with our learning specialists generally require support in math skills, foundational literacy skills, reading comprehension, and/or written expression. The learning specialist most often provides intervention in one-to-one sessions or in a dyad. The child-centered approach at Quad Prep is highly collaborative, a trait that the learning specialist must uphold to provide personalized support to each student. While most students who work with our learning specialists are performing below grade-level, learning specialists do, on occasion, work with students who are far exceeding grade-level expectations.

<li>Conduct regular assessments to document the growth of students in areas needing support, and to support teachers in periodic benchmark assessments schoolwide.</li>
<li>Empower students to take charge of their learning by providing all necessary scaffolding, modeling, materials, and resources, and consistently maintaining a high level of expectation for student success.</li>
<li>Collaborate with other academic staff and psychosocial staff members to plan, integrate, and facilitate cross-curricular, inquiry-based projects.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Communicate with parents and guardians to provide feedback on pupils’ academic and social-emotional progress through parent-teacher conferences, written reports, phone calls, and emails.&nbsp;</li>

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:&nbsp;

$20-$25/hr

Essential Job Functions:

Provide support and intervention as needed to help each child remain on track for success.

Create and advance a personal and optimistic relationship with a child.

Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing personal objectives.

Interact with students throughout the after-school period to observe and support positive growth.
</li>
<li>
Provide timely feedback to students and their parents to keep them engaged in the child’s positive social-emotional development.

Communicate with students, parents and school leadership on any concerns that may develop.
</li>
<li>
Provide ongoing mentoring in a supportive after-school environment.
</li>
<li>
Work hours will be consistent Monday through Friday with potential for some weekend or evening scheduled activities or events.

Required Skills:
<ul>
<li>
Minimum of 3 years experience, or comparable, with elementary school students supporting their social-emotional well-being.

<li>
Excellent communication skills.
</li>
<li>
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
</li>
<li>
Experience communicating and supporting families using workshops, family interaction and intervention skills.
</li>
<li>
Understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it contributes to self-paced online learning. 
</li>
<li>
Must be capable of accessing and transmitting information using a computer.
</li>
<li>
May be required to walk up and down stairs.
</li>
<li>
May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
</li>
<li>
Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma required
</li>

Bachelor’s Degree preferred with a concentration in Child Psychology or Social Work

Minimum 3 years student support experience.
</li>
<li>
Experience working with a diverse student population is helpful. Bilingual; Spanish is a plus.

Job Responsibilities for a Special Education Teacher:

<li>Provide pediatric therapy services and/or evaluations to children aged birth 21 years in a natural setting.</li>
