Job DescriptionPosition Overview
The Hillman/Tailman is an essential member of the pipe crew, working closely with the Pipelayer and Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently install underground utility systems such as storm drains, sanitary sewers, and waterlines.
The Hillman/Tailman assists with trench preparation, pipe alignment, grade checks, setting structures, and backfill operations. This position requires strong teamwork, attention to detail, and adherence to all safety standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesPipe Installation Support
<ul>

Assist the Pipelayer in placing and aligning RCP, HDPE, and PVC pipe sections to grade and line.
</li>
<li>
Maintain proper pipe jointing, gasket installation, and lubrication as directed.
</li>
<li>
Check grades and elevations using laser or level rods under the direction of the Foreman.
</li>
<li>
Guide the operator during trench excavation, pipe placement, and backfill to ensure accuracy and safety.
</li>
<li>
Operate hand tools, levels, and other small equipment as needed.
</li>
</ul>
Trench &amp; Worksite Safety
<ul>
<li>
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized trench and work area at all times.
</li>
<li>
Set up and remove trench boxes, shoring, and safety barriers as instructed.
</li>
<li>
Follow all OSHA trenching and excavation standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P).

Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Crew Coordination
<ul>

Communicate clearly with the Foreman, Operator, and Pipelayer to support efficient workflow.

Follow instructions accurately and assist in positioning materials, tools, and equipment.

Help with setup, relocation, and cleanup of the job site daily.

Equipment &amp; Material Handling
<ul>

Signal and guide heavy equipment operators when moving pipe, structures, or materials.

Load, unload, and organize pipe, fittings, and bedding material.
</li>

Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of tools and small equipment.
</li>

Qualifications

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in underground utility or pipe crew work preferred (will train qualified candidates).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

<li>Loads and unloads construction supplies to and from flatbeds both manually and with the use of equipment.</li>
<li>Prepares construction site as needed, including setting up jobsite with signs, cones, and materials; breaks down construction site at end of job.</li>
<li>Prepares patches to required depth. Hand digs for locates and operates jackhammer when necessary.</li>
<li>Operates a variety of equipment including: hand and power tools, roller, backhoe, etc.</li>
<li>Performs flagging duties as needed.</li>
<li>Follows all safety rules and regulations and practices preventive safety measures; wears required PPE.</li>

Duties specific to asphalt:

<li>Measures and lines out area for paving jobs.</li>
<li>Uses rakes, lutes, and shovels to dump, shovel, and level asphalt on jobsites and from the paver.</li>
<li>Rakes, sweeps, rolls, inspects asphalt and repeats.</li>
<li>Sweeps and cleans the area in front of the paver.</li>
<li>Assists the screed operator with operating the paver as necessary.</li>
<li>Seals patches as needed.</li>
</ul>
Duties specific to concrete:
<ul>
<li>Prepares work site for concrete pour, using shovels and other hand tools. Backfills area with sub-grade materials and compacts to level the work area.</li>
<li>Sets concrete forms, ensuring they have the correct depth and pitch with help of lead/foreman.</li>
<li>Ensures the cement mixture is safely handled, properly poured, and finished free of cracks and imperfections with help of lead/foreman.</li>
<li>Smooths and finishes freshly poured cement or concrete, using floats, trowels, screeds, or powered cement finishing tools with help of lead/foreman.</li>
<li>Removes and cleans forms, boards, and stakes once job is complete; cleans tools and ensures debris is removed from work site.</li>
<li>Cleans and maintain tools, trucks and equipment.</li>
