About Us: ALMA ("soul" in Spanish and Portuguese) is a neighborhood coffeehouse built around the heart and community of a farmers market - rooted in community, seasonal produce from local farms and makers, and genuine hospitality.
Summary of Position:
The Baker's Assistant's will assist the Baker in bakery/pastry production. They will be responsible in assisting with the following duties, including but not limited to, prep, packaging, dishwashing and cleaning. There will be a lot of hands-on production on a daily basis.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Unmold desserts with care to maintain presentation and quality
- Perform general food prep tasks in support of the pastry team including prepping fresh produce and all other bakery ingredients
- Follow basic recipes and instructions to prepare simple items as directed
- Wash dishes and maintain clean, sanitized kitchen equipment and workspaces
- Restock ingredients, packaging materials, and supplies as needed
- Clean and maintain ovens, workstations, and baking areas throughout the kitchen
- Follow the production and delivery schedule to ensure items are packaged and ready on time
- Pack and clearly label delivery desserts
- Pulling items from the freezer to be ready for the next days production
- Traying up portioned desserts and baking off some basic items
- Understand and consistently follow food safety and sanitation standards, along with kitchen rules, policies, and procedures
- Complete additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor(s)
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Be able to read and understand recipes.
- Must have or be able to attain a ServSafe Certificate as required by the county of San Luis Obispo.
- Must have or be able to attain a valid California Sexual Harassment Prevention Certificate
- Must have a high level of integrity.
- Must be able to work well with a team.
- Good communication and organization skills
- Ability to follow directions and basic written recipes closely
- Strong attention to detail, especially when packaging and labeling items
- Ability to work efficiently and stay on schedule in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work self-sufficiently once trained
- High level of integrity and reliability
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn
Physical Requirements:
- High level of stamina to stand for extended periods, up to 8 hours
- Ability to perform repetitive motions, along with grasping, writing, sitting, walking, listening, hearing, and visual acuity
- Ability to occasionally lift, balance, and move food product and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform well in a fast-paced, busy environment while maintaining attention to detail
Education and Experience:
- No prior baking or kitchen experience required; prior food service, packaging, or dish room experience is preferred
- Must have or be able to attain a valid California Food Handlers card.
- Valid California Sexual Harassment Prevention Certificate
