Position Announcement
As a Police Sergeant at Utah Valley University, you will play a key leadership role in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive campus environment where students, faculty, staff, and visitors can thrive. Summary of Responsibilities
- Supervises the activities of subordinate police personnel. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the operation and goals of police assignments. Carries out human resource activities by evaluating employee performance, initiating disciplinary action, and making commendation recommendations. Exercises direct command in a manner that assures order, appropriate conduct, discipline, and efficiency. Ensures compliance with departmental standards.
- Schedules and organizes the work of subordinate personnel. Disseminates criminal and administrative information to subordinate personnel. Reviews and analyzes reports prepared and submitted by officers for accuracy, completeness, and essential elements. Maintains positive community relations and department image.
- Investigates and resolves internal and external complaints. Identifies training needs and conducts training for department personnel. Performs criminal investigations as needed.
- Perform duties as Incident Commander.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
- Certification as a Category 1 Peace Officer.
- Three years of police experience.
- POST Certified.
- Valid driver's license.
- Supervisory/Leadership Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two years of experience in a University setting.
- An associate degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field, completion of a police supervisory/leadership certificate program, and/or field training officer experience.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of Utah Code, local laws, and ordinances.
- Knowledge of investigative tactics, information sources, and a productive line of inquiry.
Skills
- Skills in the use of firearms.
- Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are expected to be made independently
- Effective supervisory and management skills.
Abilities
- Operation of a motor vehicle at high speed, in pursuit situations, and in adverse conditions while maintaining a safe operation.
- Able to communicate effectively with a broad group of individuals.
- Must maintain control when others may not.
- Ability to handle high stress, highly volatile situations.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to run and walk around campus to protect all personnel and property.
