Job Description

Job Description

We are currently seeking dependable, compassionate, and person-centered Direct Support Professionals to provide Companion services.

Position Summary

As a Direct Support Professional, you will provide individualized support based on each person’s needs, preferences, goals, and Individual Support Plan.

This role is more than simply providing care. DSPs help individuals participate in their communities, develop relationships, make choices, increase independence, pursue personal interests, and enjoy meaningful everyday experiences.

Depending on the individual’s needs, support may include community activities, recreation, socialization, personal organization, safety awareness, relationship development, and other activities identified in the Individual Support Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Provide respectful, person-centered support consistent with the individual’s Individual Support Plan.
  • Promote choice, independence, dignity, privacy, and self-determination.
  • Support individuals with accessing and participating in community activities of their choosing.
  • Encourage individuals to develop and maintain meaningful relationships.
  • Support independence rather than completing tasks for individuals when they are able to participate.
  • Follow established service plans, behavioral-support strategies, health and safety procedures, and risk-mitigation strategies.
  • Learn each individual’s communication style, preferences, strengths, and support needs.
  • Observe and report changes in health, behavior, functioning, or safety.
  • Recognize and report incidents or concerns according to agency and ODP requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Complete accurate and timely service documentation and progress notes.
  • Communicate professionally with individuals, families, Upendo management, Supports Coordinators, and other members of the support team.
  • Attend required orientation, training, meetings, and individual-specific training.
  • Report reliably and on time for scheduled assignments.
  • Transport individuals when assigned and authorized, provided all driver and vehicle requirements are met.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Be dependable, professional, and respectful.
  • Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Be able to follow written support plans and instructions.
  • Be able to complete electronic or written service documentation.
  • Be comfortable supporting adults in home and community settings.
  • Successfully complete required background screening and clearances.
  • Complete required ODP and Upendo orientation and training.
  • Be able to work independently while following supervisory guidance.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, patience, accountability, and respect for individual rights.

Driving Requirements

For assignments that require transportation, employees must:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Provide required automobile insurance, vehicle registration, and inspection documentation when using a personal vehicle.
  • Follow Upendo transportation and vehicle-safety requirements.
