Environmental Services / Hospital Housekeeping Technician

Position Summary

The Environmental Services/Housekeeping Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment throughout the hospital. This position performs cleaning, sanitation, waste removal, linen and supply distribution, and other environmental services duties in patient care and support areas, including the Operating Rooms (OR), inpatient floors, Emergency Room (ER), and Radiology.

The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively in a healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous housekeeping, janitorial, environmental services, or custodial experience preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare, hospital, school, hotel, or similar environment preferred.
  • Ability to follow sanitation, infection-control, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely handle and transport waste, linen, cleaning supplies, and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and detail.
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform sanitation and waste-removal duties throughout the hospital, including Operating Rooms, inpatient floors, Radiology, and Emergency Room areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness around trash and cardboard compactors.
  • Remove hazardous waste bins from designated hospital areas and transport them to the Biohazardous Waste Room in accordance with hospital safety procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect black trash bins daily using a power washer.
  • Receive and organize deliveries of new linen, cleaning supplies, and other materials.
  • Stock incoming supplies and materials in designated storage areas.
  • Restock scrubs in the Operating Rooms and distribute linen to the Operating Rooms, inpatient floors, Radiology, and Emergency Room.
  • Clean windows and glass surfaces at the front entrance, Operating Rooms, Emergency Room, and cafeteria.
  • Inspect and replace expired or worn curtains in recovery areas, inpatient rooms, Radiology, and Emergency Room areas.
  • Clean lights, vents, and other areas as needed.
  • Replace batteries in hand sanitizer, paper towel, and soap dispensers as needed.
  • Assist the Floor Technician with assigned duties and floor-care activities.
  • Maintain work areas, equipment, and supplies in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Follow all hospital policies and procedures related to infection prevention, hazardous waste, personal protective equipment (PPE), and workplace safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting. The employee must be able to safely operate cleaning equipment and transport waste, linen, supplies, and other materials throughout the facility.

Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the hospital environment, including patient care areas, Operating Rooms, Emergency Room, Radiology, inpatient units, storage areas, and waste-handling areas. The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, medical waste, odors, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Appropriate PPE and safety procedures must be followed at all times.
