Job Description

Job DescriptionShape the Safety of Rail Travel

Join our Queens, NY team as a Railcar Welding & Mechanical Technician (Carman) and keep our fleet operating safely and efficiently. You’ll blend precision welding with hands-on mechanical repair to return railcars to service with confidence and quality.

A day in the life

You start with a safety huddle and job walk. A car arrives with a coupler issue—after your inspection, you map out the weld repairs and component replacement plan. By midday, you’ve fabricated a small patch, verified brake function, and updated digital work logs. You finish by tidying the bay, reviewing standards, and handing off clear notes to the next tech.

What you’ll do

  • Execute structural and component welding and fabrication on railcars using appropriate processes and equipment.
  • Inspect railcars to diagnose mechanical faults and determine the scope of repair.
  • Service and repair core systems and parts, including brakes, wheels, and couplers.
  • Collaborate with teammates to troubleshoot complex issues and confirm root causes.
  • Maintain strict safety practices and keep your workstation orderly and compliant.
  • Document all work performed, capturing measurements, materials, and repair details.
  • Stay current with industry best practices and evolving repair standards.

What you bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in welding or mechanics is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience as a welder or mechanic; rail industry experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in welding techniques, related tools, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Comfort working independently and within a team setting.
  • Valid driver’s license and flexibility to work varied hours as needed.

Why this role matters

Your craftsmanship directly impacts reliability and rider safety. If you take pride in accurate welds, clean records, and well-tested repairs, you’ll thrive here.
