About the position
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Junior Field Layout Technician to perform site layout and staking activities to ensure the accurate placement of structures and infrastructure as per project drawings and specifications. This role involves reading blueprints, using surveying instruments, and coordinating with site engineers and project managers to ensure accurate execution of the project design. Training is provided.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications for layout purposes.
- Perform construction layout and staking using total stations, GPS, levels, and other surveying equipment.
- Establish and mark reference points, lines, grades, and elevations for foundations, roads, utilities, and other site elements.
- Maintain accurate and detailed layout records and field notes.
- Verify measurements and perform calculations to ensure layout accuracy.
- Collaborate with project engineers, superintendents, field crews, and subcontractors to identify and resolve layout issues.
- Monitor project progress and adjust layout as necessary due to design changes or unforeseen field conditions.
- Perform work in accordance with company safety requirements and quality standards.
- Maintain layout equipment and ensure tools are properly calibrated, secured, and in good working condition.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
- Working knowledge of construction math, including geometry and basic trigonometry.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and safely navigate active construction sites.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel frequently, including overnight travel.
Preferred:
- 2+ years of construction layout or land surveying experience.
- Technical training or associate degree in construction, civil engineering, surveying, or a related field.
- Experience using total stations, robotic total stations, GPS equipment, and/or similar layout technology, including Trimble, Leica, or Topcon.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other construction layout software.
- OSHA 10/30 or other applicable construction safety training.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires regular work on active construction sites and in outdoor environments. Employees must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods, including over uneven terrain.
- Bend, crouch, kneel, and perform other movements necessary to complete field layout activities.
- Safely lift, carry, set up, and transport surveying and layout equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.

Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary: $72,000–$80,000 annually, depending on experience.
- Annual discretionary bonus program based on company and individual performance.

- Paid Time Off. (8 hours in a day)
- First year of employment: 10 days, prorated based on hire date
- January 1 prior to 6 months of employment: 10 days
- January 1 following 6 months of employment: 15 days
- January 1 following 5 years of employment: 20 days
- Fuel card for authorized business-related travel.
- Company-provided cell phone and laptop.
- Required business travel expenses paid in accordance with company policy.
Location, Schedule & Travel:
- Based in Boise, Idaho, with frequent travel to project locations and overnight stays outside the area.
- This is a full-time position. Work schedules and start/end times may vary based on project needs.
- Additional or extended hours may be required depending on project schedules and field conditions.
