Direct Counsel is seeking a Data Protection, Privacy and Security Associate Attorney with 3+ years of experience to join the Data Protection, Privacy and Security practice of a leading global law firm. This role offers the opportunity to advise sophisticated organizations on complex and evolving privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance matters.

The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge issues involving U.S. state and federal privacy laws, emerging regulatory frameworks, and cross-border compliance initiatives. The role includes direct client engagement and opportunities to contribute to innovative, enterprise-level privacy programs.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Admission to the District of Columbia or New York Bar

  • 3+ years of experience in data privacy, cybersecurity, or regulatory advisory work

  • Experience with global privacy programs, incident response, or compliance frameworks preferred

  • In-house or regulatory experience is a plus, particularly involving sensitive data or emerging technologies

  • Direct and applicable experience at an AmLaw 100 firm preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and professional judgment

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively

  • Strong conceptual thinking and persuasive communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on complex data privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance matters

  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis regarding applicable privacy laws, regulations, and emerging legal developments

  • Draft legal memoranda, agreements, correspondence, and other legal documents

  • Assist with the development and implementation of enterprise-level privacy and compliance programs

  • Support incident response and other cybersecurity-related matters

  • Advise on U.S. state and federal privacy requirements and cross-border privacy issues

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive, practical, and business-focused legal advice

  • Collaborate with attorneys and business professionals to develop effective legal and compliance strategies

  • Stay current on evolving privacy, cybersecurity, and regulatory developments

  • Participate in professional development, firm initiatives, and pro bono activities

Position Details

  • Location: Washington, DC or New York, NY

  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid, with regular in-office presence and flexibility for remote work

  • Compensation: $260,000–$390,000 annually, depending on geographic market, experience, skills, and qualifications
