ARMORED UNIVERSAL FIRE PROTECTION
Fire Sprinkler Installer / Fitter
Based in CA.
Travel required · Company truck provided for work assignments
Position overview
ARMORED UNIVERSAL FIRE PROTECTION is hiring an experienced, reliable fire sprinkler fitter to install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair fire sprinkler systems. Applicants must have hands-on experience with new construction, tenant improvements (TI), retrofits, residential systems, underground fire service piping, and service work on active fire sprinkler systems.
We need a fitter who can read plans, organize the work, identify problems before they cause delays, and carry an assignment through testing and closeout. This position requires dependable attendance, professional communication, and the ability to travel to assigned jobsites, including overnight stays when the project requires them.
Field responsibilities
- New construction and retrofits. Read approved sprinkler drawings and field-measure before cutting or ordering pipe. Lay out and install mains, cross mains, branch lines, drops, sprinkler heads, risers, hangers, and restraints. Identify conflicts with ceilings, structural members, ductwork, and other trades, and bring them to the foreman or project manager before changing the installation.
- Tenant improvements. Add, relocate, or replace sprinkler heads and modify branch piping to suit approved ceiling and wall layouts. Protect finishes and occupied spaces, coordinate shutdown windows, and leave the work area clean.
- Residential systems. Install and service residential sprinklers and piping, including listed CPVC systems. Follow approved plans and manufacturer instructions for fittings, supports, compatible materials, and cure times.
- Underground fire service. Install and repair private fire mains, including C900 PVC and ductile iron piping, valves, backflow assemblies, fire department connections, and riser connections. Coordinate excavation and inspections, verify alignment and joint restraint, and assist with flushing and pressure testing.
- Service and troubleshooting. Locate leaks and identify whether they originate at sprinkler heads, fittings, valves, or piping. Document corrosion, damaged components, and other deficiencies with photos and clear notes. Get authorization before performing work outside the assigned scope.
- Testing and closeout. Perform or assist with required tests and inspections. Record readings, test results, materials used, and remaining deficiencies. Verify valve positions, check for leaks, and report the system’s final status before leaving the site.
Work on active fire sprinkler systems
Applicants must know how to service systems that are in operation when they arrive. This includes identifying the affected system and control valves, coordinating notifications and an authorized impairment, isolating and draining the affected section, verifying pressure is relieved before opening piping or removing components, and restoring the system to service. The fitter must confirm that required notifications and restoration checks are complete and immediately report any condition that prevents the system from being returned to normal operation.
Experience and journeyman qualifications
- Verifiable field experience in fire sprinkler installation and service, with references who can confirm the applicant’s duties and reliability.
- Journeyman-level placement and wages require demonstrated trade experience, independent field ability, and working knowledge of the NFPA standards applicable to the assigned work. Applicants must be able to explain how they apply those standards in the field.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 13 for sprinkler installation, NFPA 13R and 13D for applicable residential installations, NFPA 24 for private fire service mains, and NFPA 25 for inspection, testing, maintenance, and impairments. Follow the approved plans, applicable adopted editions, and local authority requirements for each project.
- Proficiency with pipe threading and grooving equipment, measuring and layout tools, sprinkler wrenches, and common installation and testing equipment.
- Ability to plan daily work, prepare material lists, recognize when a field condition needs approval, and give clear updates to the foreman or project manager.
- Provide any applicable journeyman credentials, apprenticeship records, trade certifications, or safety training records.
Reliability, travel, and safety
- Report on time, ready to work, and communicate promptly if a delay, absence, material shortage, or jobsite issue will affect the schedule.
- Travel reliably to assigned local and out-of-town jobsites, including overnight assignments. Be available for early starts and scheduled after-hours shutdowns when required.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and meet company vehicle insurance requirements. A company truck is provided for work assignments. Drivers are responsible for safe operation, securing tools and materials, and promptly reporting vehicle issues.
- Perform essential field duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties include overhead installation, working from ladders and lifts, and handling pipe and equipment using appropriate lifting methods.
- Follow site safety procedures for lifts, fall protection, pressure testing, and excavation. Stop and report unsafe conditions before proceeding.
- Communicate professionally with customers, inspectors, supervisors, and other trades. Keep the jobsite orderly and take responsibility for the quality of completed work.

Include one example of a system shutdown and restoration you handled and one underground installation or repair you worked on. For each, explain which tasks you performed independently.
