Job Description

Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Supervised Living
Family Matters LLC
Primary Shifts Available: 6:00 AM–3:00 PM and 3:00 PM–10:00 PM

Job Overview

Family Matters LLC is looking for dependable, compassionate, and energetic Direct Support Professionals to join our supervised living team.

We operate a small residential setting where staff work closely with adults who need support with daily living skills, routines, community involvement, medication management, personal care, and increasing their independence.

We are looking for staff who are patient, consistent, professional, and comfortable being actively involved during their shift. This is not a position where staff simply sit in the home and supervise. Our residents benefit from structure, encouragement, conversation, activities, community outings, life-skills development, and staff who are willing to help them work toward greater independence.

We are primarily hiring for:

  • Morning Shift: 6:00 AM–3:00 PM
  • Evening Shift: 3:00 PM–10:00 PM

Weekend availability and flexibility are strongly preferred.

What You’ll Do

As a DSP with Family Matters LLC, you may:

  • Assist residents with morning and evening routines, including hygiene, grooming, dressing, and maintaining their personal space.
  • Provide reminders, prompting, and hands-on assistance based on each resident’s individual needs.
  • Support residents with meal preparation, healthier food choices, grocery planning, and household routines.
  • Administer medications and accurately complete medication documentation after required training and competency are completed.
  • Help residents practice independent living skills such as laundry, cleaning, budgeting, communication, meal preparation, and organization.
  • Engage residents in structured activities instead of relying on television or electronics throughout the entire shift.
  • Encourage appropriate social skills, coping skills, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Support residents with community outings, appointments, shopping, recreational activities, and other scheduled activities.
  • Provide transportation when required as part of the resident’s services.
  • Follow behavioral support strategies and provide calm, consistent redirection when a resident becomes frustrated or has difficulty following expectations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with residents while still creating a warm and supportive home environment.
  • Observe residents for changes in behavior, mood, health, or functioning and communicate concerns appropriately.
  • Complete progress notes, medication records, shift documentation, incident reports, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Complete assigned household responsibilities and help maintain a clean, organized, and safe home.
  • Communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, families, and members of the resident’s support team.
  • Follow all Family Matters LLC policies, individual service plans, safety procedures, confidentiality requirements, and DBHDS expectations.

Who We’re Looking For

The right person for this position is someone who:

  • Is dependable and consistently arrives to work on time.
  • Enjoys working directly with people and helping others become more independent.
  • Understands that individuals with developmental disabilities deserve respect, choice, patience, and dignity.
  • Can be kind while still maintaining appropriate rules and boundaries.
  • Is comfortable redirecting challenging or repetitive behaviors without becoming argumentative or frustrated.
  • Can follow written service plans, medical instructions, behavioral strategies, and household procedures.
  • Is able to document clearly and accurately.
  • Works well as part of a team and communicates when something needs attention.
  • Takes initiative and does not need to be repeatedly reminded to engage residents or complete assigned responsibilities.
  • Can maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.

Preferred Experience

Previous experience as a Direct Support Professional, Residential Counselor, Mental Health Skill-Building staff, Personal Care Assistant, CNA, Behavioral Technician, Group Home Counselor, Community Engagement staff, or similar position is helpful.

Experience supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, autism, behavioral needs, or mental health needs is strongly preferred.

We are also willing to consider applicants who have the right attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.

Requirements

Applicants must be able to meet applicable employment and training requirements for a Virginia DBHDS-licensed residential program.

Requirements may include:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Reliable transportation
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Criminal background check
  • CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification
  • Medication administration training/competency when applicable
  • Required DBHDS orientation and competency training
  • Ability to complete required documentation electronically and/or in writing
  • Ability to safely assist residents with everyday activities and community participation

Our Environment

Family Matters LLC is a smaller supervised living program, and we want the home to actually feel like a home. We value staff who build positive relationships with residents, keep the environment structured, communicate with one another, and understand that the little things matter.

That might mean helping someone prepare breakfast before starting their day, working through a life-skills activity, going into the community, helping someone calm down when they are frustrated, encouraging better choices, or simply taking the time to teach instead of doing everything for them.

Our goal is to help the individuals we serve become as safe, confident, involved, and independent as possible in their homes and communities.

If you are looking for a position where you can come to work, stay engaged, build relationships, and genuinely make a difference in someone’s everyday life, we would love to hear from you.
