The field of Cardiothoracic Critical Care is an expanding area within critical care medicine focused on treating patients with cardiothoracic conditions. This includes individuals recovering from cardiac surgery, those experiencing cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure, and patients undergoing thoracic transplants, as well as those requiring temporary mechanical circulatory support such as ECMO, Impella, or intra-aortic balloon pumps. Providing effective care for these critically ill patients necessitates advanced training in the relevant knowledge, technology, and procedural skills that characterize this intricate and evolving specialty. As a prominent cardiovascular center with a legacy of delivering state-of-the-art cardiothoracic critical care, we are exceptionally equipped to address the increasing need for specialized training in this area.
This one-year, non-ACGME fellowship offers an in-depth training opportunity for board-certified and board-eligible intensivists who aspire to excel as cardiothoracic specialists. Participants will engage in our high-volume, high-acuity Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), gaining essential exposure, knowledge, and technical expertise required to manage patients with advanced cardiothoracic conditions.

Clinical Experience
Fellows will dedicate several months to our 28-bed CTICU, focusing on acquiring comprehensive knowledge of the specific pathologies, management strategies, and technologies pertinent to our patient population.
This clinical experience includes:
Approximately 22 weeks of daytime rounding, which encompasses:
- Progressive autonomy in patient management and rounding
- ECMO consultations and participation in multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock team discussions
- Direct oversight of residents and fellows
About 36 night shifts, which involve:
- Independent management of CTICU patients during overnight hours
- Admission and care of new patients and late surgical cases
- Handling ECMO consultations, cardiogenic shock team calls, and interhospital transfers
- Providing nighttime ECMO support, including cannulation, troubleshooting, and ECPR
- Access to CTICU attending support from home for acute management and procedural issues
