RN Cath Lab Job Description (Hospital Setting)
A Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab) is a specialized RN who provides direct patient care before, during, and after invasive cardiovascular procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, valvuloplasty, and pacemaker implantation
They work in a high‐pressure, fast‐paced environment alongside cardiologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and other team members to ensure patient safety and procedural success.
Key Responsibilities
- Pre‐procedure care: Assess patients (allergies, renal function, INR, NPO status), educate on the procedure, and prepare them physically and emotionally rntonp.com.
- Equipment & medication prep: Set up cath lab equipment, prepare sterile fields, and administer medications (sedatives, anticoagulants, emergency drugs) as ordered
- Intra‐procedure support: Monitor vital signs (hemodynamic monitoring, arterial lines, cardiac output), assist with sterile technique, and recognize/respond to cardiac emergencies (e.g., STEMI, tamponade, arrhythmias)
- Post‐procedure care: Monitor recovery, check insertion sites (groin/wrist), assess for complications, and provide discharge instructions
- Documentation: Accurately record care in accordance with hospital and cath lab policies Velvet Jobs.
- Team collaboration: Work with physicians, technologists, and other nurses to maintain quality care and safety
- Quality assurance: Participate in data collection, equipment maintenance, and procedural quality improvement
Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing; some positions may require graduate study
- Licensure: Current RN license; ACLS, BLS, CPR, and BCLS certification required
- Certifications: CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) preferred; IV, PICC, HCP skills beneficial .
- Experience: 2+ years in a cardiac cath lab; 5+ years as an RN in a cath lab setting preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in cardiac rhythms and emergency response
- Strong hemodynamic monitoring skills
- Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and pharmacology
- Ability to work under pressure in a sterile environment
