Job Description
Job Description
Systems Engineer - Physical Security (Access Control & Video)
Detroit Metro, Michigan | Full-Time, Field-Based | Base $70,000 to $100,000, calibrated to experience | Company vehicle and tools
Own the jobsite, not just the programming.
Our client is a growing, family-owned Midwest technology integrator delivering enterprise networking, cybersecurity, cloud, and physical security under one roof. Customers increasingly want one partner for the network and for the cameras and badge readers protecting it. That is the model this company built, and its physical security practice is the fastest-moving part of the business.
The Detroit metro territory just opened and is a top hiring priority. You will be a core field engineer in a territory the company is actively building: trusted to run sites, own customers, and represent the company on every job.
The honest version: this is a field seat. Expect roughly 75% of your time on customer sites and up to 20% overnight travel, and you will often be the only company representative on a jobsite. If you want to program access control from behind a desk, this is the wrong seat.
What you will own
• End-to-end field delivery of access control and video surveillance systems: install, program, configure, commission, and test against plans, drawings, and specs.
• The customer on site. You represent the company in every interaction, not just close tickets.
• Network appliance setup and configuration for security systems.
• As-built documentation, service records, and end-user training. You close the loop, not just the install.
• Judgment in the field. When the site does not match the design, you make the call and still land what the project plan is tracking toward.
What you need to have done
• Hands-on installation and commissioning of access control and video surveillance systems. Presales or design experience alone will not carry this seat.
• Genetec, Avigilon, and/or Milestone experience. Certifications preferred, not required when the experience is strong. Verkada and Hanwha are a plus, and comparable major platforms count.
• Run a jobsite solo as the on-site subject matter expert.
• Low-voltage wiring, hardware, and security network fluency.
• Self-driven and comfortable with ambiguity. This is a growing practice, not a rigid process shop.
• Polished, professional, and high-integrity on customer sites. Field teams show up branded head to toe, and it matters here.
The profile that wins: a senior security technician or systems engineer at a smaller integrator who already does everything - install, program, commission, and own the customer.
What success looks like in 12 months
• You run the territory's install and commissioning workload independently, or lead technicians on larger jobs.
• You are a go-to face of the company for access control and video customers in the Detroit market.
• You are on track for the next step, if you want it.
What it pays
• Base salary of $70,000 to $100,000, calibrated to experience.
• Company vehicle and tools provided.
• Full benefits active on day one. No waiting period.
• 401(k) with a 100% match on the first 4%, fully vested from the start.
• Unlimited PTO.
• A high-trust, high-autonomy culture. No micromanaging. Real ownership of your sites and your customers.
Where this goes
A documented career ladder: Systems Engineer to Senior Systems Engineer, then Enterprise Architect (full system design, presales-facing) or Project Manager. The company can point to an engineer who has already made the move into project management.
The process
