2027 Blast Effects (Mechanical Engineering) Co-op - San Antonio Office

Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk®) is one of the world’s leading explosion analysis, structural design, and risk management companies. BakerRisk provides comprehensive consulting, engineering, laboratory, and full-scale facility testing services to government agencies and private companies who are involved with hazardous operations or materials.

Dates of Employment for 2027:

  • Spring/Summer Term: Monday, January 11th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, August 20th at noon
  • Summer/Fall Term: Monday, May 10th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, December 17th at noon

Full time: 40 hours per week

Location: San Antonio, TX – Work primarily at Box Canyon Test Facility in Bracketville, Texas Monday-Thursday.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support field and lab testing projects focused on explosions and related phenomena.
  • Assist engineers by applying standard methods to evaluate explosion related phenomena and predict blast and fragment loads.
  • Perform routine engineering calculations, conduct research, and prepare presentations and reports.
  • Expected to be able to solve problems using procedures and criteria assigned by technical staff and establish priorities for completion of assigned workload.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a minimal 3.0 GPA in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Rising Junior or Senior level student.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to learn engineering software as needed to perform assigned tasks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required to interact with internal and external contacts.
  • Previous hands-on experience with field or lab-scale testing preferred.

Co-op Program:

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Intern/Co-op: Sophomores-Seniors, graduates, and graduate candidates in MEEN, NUEN, ECEN, MSEN, MMET.
  • Full Time: M.S./M.E. and PhD candidates in the above disciplines.

EXPERIENCE GAINED

  • Application of coursework: fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control systems, etc.
  • Hands-on test stand and test article construction and instrumentation for large-scale vapor cloud explosion testing.
  • High-speed data acquisition (National Instruments and LabVIEW) of pressure, temperature, strain, acceleration, etc.
  • High-speed camera (AOS and Phantom) and drone operation.
  • Analysis and reduction of vapor cloud explosion test data.
  • Mathematical modeling of real-world industrial hazards.
  • Assist other groups with jet fire, chemical dispersion, and structural response testing.
  • Work with an engineer mentor for an 8-month, individual Co-op project.
  • Pursue personal interests that align with company projects and goals.
  • Build relationships with fellow Co-op students and engineers.

SCHEDULE

  • Two terms offered primarily at Box Canyon Test Facility.
  • Full time: Time split between test site operations, client site visits, and San Antonio office. Balance varies year-to-year.
