Retail Cashier – Wags to Riches Thrift Store

Location: Johnson City, Tennessee

Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly

Starting Pay: $15.00 per hour

Schedule: Tuesday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with occasional Saturdays.

About Us

Wags to Riches Thrift Store is operated by Appalachian Highlands Humane Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving, protecting, and advancing the lives of animals throughout the Appalachian Highlands.

Every purchase at Wags to Riches directly supports our animal rescue and lifesaving programs. We are looking for a dependable, customer-focused Cashier to join our team and help us provide an exceptional shopping experience while supporting our mission.

Position Summary

The Retail Cashier is responsible for providing friendly, professional customer service while accurately processing sales transactions and maintaining an organized checkout area.

This position requires an individual who is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a busy retail environment. The ideal candidate enjoys interacting with customers, works well with others, and takes pride in contributing to a mission-driven organization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Greet customers and provide friendly, professional service.
  • Assist customers with questions, merchandise inquiries, and purchases.
  • Handle customer concerns professionally and refer issues to management when necessary.
  • Thank customers for supporting Wags to Riches and the Humane Society.

Cash Register & Sales Transactions

  • Accurately operate the cash register and point-of-sale system.
  • Process cash, credit card, and debit card transactions.
  • Maintain accurate cash handling procedures and follow register accountability requirements.
  • Follow established policies regarding discounts, returns, exchanges, and sales promotions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked checkout area.

Store Operations & Teamwork

  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming retail environment.
  • Return misplaced merchandise to the appropriate departments.
  • Work cooperatively with management, fellow associates, and volunteers.
  • Follow established store policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Complete assigned opening and closing responsibilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Previous cashier or retail experience preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Basic math skills and the ability to handle cash accurately.
  • Dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to follow instructions and established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and move throughout the store as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, with assistance available for heavier items.

Work Schedule & Compensation

This is a full-time, hourly position with a starting pay rate of $15.00 per hour.

The regular work schedule is Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with occasional Saturdays as needed.

An unpaid meal break is provided in accordance with store scheduling procedures.
