Based on candidate location, our primary preference is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence at our Baltimore, MD or New York City location three days per week (Tues/Wed/Thurs). Our secondary preference is remote.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
You will work closely with product business owner, technical product management, and software engineers, and will focus on these topics:

<li>Identify, prototype, and implement enhancements on the core optimization approach, which includes:
<ul>
<li>Implementing changes or enhancements to the core data model and problem modelling as requested by the business owner and product manager.</li>
<li>Supporting integration efforts between the optimization platform and the solver to scale new features.</li>
<li>Benchmarking performance across various program stacks, load profiles, locations, and other key variables.</li>
<li>Integrating robust test coverage covering new and existing optimization logic.</li>
<li>Identifying methods to proactively flag anomalies before they impact end customers.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Collaborate with the team to assess how optimization and forecasting can be adjusted for various economic objectives.</li>
<li>Administer and review optimization accuracy reports for each site and identify and articulate the causes of any accuracy issues, including:
<ul>
<li>Identify, test, and propose potential changes to the product that address the causes of any identified accuracy issues.</li>
<li>Identify drivers and trends in market price spikes and propose bidding strategies that can better optimize asset utilization.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Support the business case for prioritizing scope items by quantifying the incremental benefit of code changes.</li>
<li>Work with the Product team to identify new and value-add data science-led or -supported opportunities.</li>
<li>Leverage existing CPower data sources and identify new sources for external data to drive higher accuracy outcomes.</li>

Requirements
<ul>
<li>Degree (Bachelors or Masters) in Computer Science, Operation Research, Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field.</li>
<li>7+ years of experience in data science or related field. </li>
<li>2-5 years of specific experience working on MILP-based optimization problems [professional preferred, academic acceptable].</li>
<li>Experience building or leading a data science practice within an organization with evidence of successful technical and human resource development in the practice.</li>
<li>Fluency and demonstrated success in Python and Pyomo.</li>
<li>Demonstrated success leveraging multiple mixed-integer nonlinear optimization techniques.</li>
<li>Understanding of machine learning algorithms (time series forecasting, clustering algorithms, probabilistic models, supervised and unsupervised learning).</li>
<li>Experience developing solutions using model predictive controls.</li>
<li>Experience with time series analysis and forecasting (LSTM, ARIMA, GARCH).</li>
<li>Advanced skills with one or more data analysis tools, to be specified in applicant’s response.</li>
<li>Experience working with Agile development teams.</li>
<li>Familiarity with electricity markets, utility tariffs, and interval data.</li>
<li>Understanding of the operational attributes and constraints of DER assets like batteries, solar, and back-up generation.</li>

About the Role
As a Machine Learning Engineer on Clair's Data team, you will be responsible for transforming diverse financial data sources, including but not limited to Plaid transactions, into production-grade features, predictive signals, and modeling pipelines that power Clair's credit and underwriting systems.
Your work will focus on building the core feature layer that our credit models depend on: extracting structure from messy financial data, designing robust predictive features, forecasting key user-level events (such as income timing or financial stability indicators), and ensuring that these features are efficiently deployed, monitored, and continuously improved.
In addition to hands-on modeling and feature engineering, you will contribute to the development of Clair's Data Science platform – building tooling, automation, and infrastructure that make it easier to train, deploy, and monitor ML systems at scale.
This role is ideal for someone who loves crafting meaningful features out of raw data, scaling ML systems in production, and driving the technical foundations of a modern financial ML stack.
Key Responsibilities

<li>Engineer high-quality features from financial and behavioral data to support credit modeling.</li>
<li>Build and maintain scalable pipelines for feature computation, income detection, and financial signal extraction.</li>
<li>Develop forecasting and predictive models for income timing, user stability, and financial behavior patterns.</li>
<li>Deploy, monitor, and optimize ML models and feature pipelines in production using AWS, Snowflake, or other tooling.</li>

Additional Details
Location: This is a hybrid position based out of New York City, you will be expected to come into the office at least three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, &amp; Thursdays) with additional days on occasion for client meetings. We're open to remote candidates whose experience and background strongly match the requirements of the role.
Compensation: The annual base salary for this role is $200,000 for NYC and SF-based candidates. The base pay for this role is determined using many factors, such as education, skills and experience and is reflective of Clair Series stage and size. Base pay is only one part of Clair's competitive total compensation package which includes equity, benefits and additional perks. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
