Northern State University, a student-centered university committed to academic excellence and fiscal responsibility, invites applications for the position of Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA). Northern State University is one of the six public universities governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. The VPFA serves as the institution's chief financial and administrative officer and is a key member of the President's Cabinet, reporting directly to the President. This executive provides strategic leadership, oversight, and stewardship of the university's financial resources and administrative operations in support of the institution's mission, strategic plan, and long-term sustainability.

Areas of direct responsibility include Finance and Administration, Facilities, Risk Management, and Human Resources. The Vice President for Finance and Administration is the university's representative on the South Dakota Board of Regents Business Affairs Council and works closely with the Northern State University Foundation, local and state governmental officials and other external constituencies in matters of importance to Northern State University.

Key Responsibilities

The Vice President for Finance and Administration is responsible for leadership and oversight of the following functional areas:

  • Financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
  • Accounting, payroll, procurement, contracts, and internal controls
  • Human resources and payroll
  • Facilities management, capital planning, and campus operations
  • Risk management, insurance, and compliance
  • Dining services and the campus bookstore
  • Debt management and cash flow oversight
  • Board reporting and collaboration with internal auditors, regulators, and financial partners



The VPFA advises the President and other members of the executive leadership team on financial strategy, policy development, and institutional risk, while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and accreditation requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, management, business administration, public administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required. A master's degree OR CPA is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of successful and progressive senior administrative leadership in finance and administration.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of financial management principles and practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data, identify issues, and develop solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a part of a senior leadership team committed to advancing the institutional mission and strategic plan.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and team management skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
