At Utah Valley University, the Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Manager plays a vital leadership role in supporting the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the University's fleet and equipment. This position oversees a skilled mechanic shop responsible for the inspection, diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and fabrication of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment that support facilities, grounds, construction, and campus operations. Combining technical expertise with team leadership, the role manages shop personnel, ensures compliance with state regulations, maintains comprehensive maintenance records, and helps safeguard the University's investment in critical operational assets.

The Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Manager serves as a trusted subject matter expert, training University personnel on the proper and safe operation of vehicles and equipment while overseeing inspections and certifications of generators, aerial lifts, and other essential assets. Summary of Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise the mechanic shop and personnel within the shop. Responsible for maintenance, repair, or fabrication of all University vehicles and equipment, including all motorized and non-motorized licensed and unlicensed vehicles used for physical plant operations, fleet management, maintenance, grounds, construction, and repair. Maintains a complete inventory system of accurate and detailed maintenance records and develops a library of mechanical and technical manuals.
• Train UVU personnel on how to start, operate, and safely use all vehicles and equipment.
• Performs weekly, monthly, and annual inspections and documentation on all UVU generators and submits necessary reports to the State of Utah, ensuring State compliance. Performs annual inspections and certifies all UVU aerial lifts, ensuring State compliance. Performs annual emissions testing on all UVU fleet vehicles.
• Implements and monitors a preventative maintenance program to assure cost-effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturer specifications. Performs diagnostics on all UVU fleet vehicles and performs any minor repairs as permitted.
• Assists in the development of the Campus Services budget to include a review of past year expenses and income related to vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and completion of two years of education from an accredited institution from a recognized trade school, plus two years of apprenticeship experience related to the Summary of Duties and A&P licenses (Airframe and Powerplant).
• Six years of experience as a mechanic in a University, commercial, industrial, or highway garage.

Knowledge

• Knowledge in repairing small and large engines and equipment.
  
• Knowledge of hydraulic repair.
  
• Knowledge of generators and aerial lifts needed for State compliance.
  
• Knowledge of vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance and diagnostics.
  
• Knowledge of vehicle emissions needed for State compliance
  

Skills

• Basic computer skills and knowledge.
  
• Possess interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  
• Skilled in vehicle and equipment diagnostics, preventive maintenance, inventory, and record keeping.
  

Abilities

• Ability to supervise and train staff.
  
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  
• Able to maintain accurate records and files.
  
• Able to perform auto body repair and painting.
  
• Able to operate heavy and light equipment.
  
• Ability to work an on-call 24/7 schedule for snow removal and other campus emergencies.
  
• Able to read and understand the electrical schematics of equipment.
  
• Able to safely operate welders (wire, arc, and gas).
  
• Demonstrated ability to monitor and manage budgets while accurately identifying and communicating the mechanical and maintenance needs of the University.
• Ability to analyze the cost-effectiveness of repairing versus replacing physical plant equipment and provide clear, data-driven recommendations, both verbally and in writing, to facility management and other stakeholders.
