Beveridge & Diamond seeks an experienced Conflicts/New Business Intake (NBI) Staff Attorney to manage firmwide conflicts processes and ensure compliance with ethical and professional obligations. This role works closely with the General Counsel, NBI Committee, and the Opinions & Governance Committee (O&G Committee) to support new business intake, conflicts clearance, and firm business contract review. The Conflicts/NBI Staff Attorney reports to the General Counsel and is supported by a Conflicts Analyst. This is a new position and an opportunity to enhance the firm’s NBI protocols and implement best practices at the nation’s top-ranked environmental law firm.


Key responsibilities include overseeing efficient workflows for new clients and matters, conflicts analysis and clearance, engagement and outside counsel guideline reviews, and ethical wall management. The position collaborates across departments—including Finance, Marketing, and IT—to support smooth and compliant business operations.


Working with the General Counsel, the Conflicts/NBI Staff Attorney will also develop and deliver training for firm attorneys and staff, stay current on applicable rules of professional conduct, and maintain and improve NBI policies, templates, and procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality practices across the firm.


Key Responsibilities

  • NBI/Conflicts Analysis/Resolution Process Management:

1. Manage workflows for new clients, matters, and lateral hires, including reviewing conflicts reports, working with attorneys to resolve legal, business, and ethical issues, and drafting waivers where needed.

2. Review engagement letters, outside counsel guidelines, conflict waivers, and other required documentation in compliance with firm policies & rules of professional conduct.

3. Communicate with clients as directed by relationship attorneys & escalate matters for higher-level review as necessary.

4. Lead conflict checks for new & ongoing matters and implement Intapp Walls to enforce ethical screens & restricted

access.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Work with attorneys, the NBI Committee, and the General Counsel to draft approvals, maintain records, and report on obligations. Update and manage template forms and standard communications to support consistent documentation practices.
  • Firm Business Contracts: Review and negotiate commercial contracts related to firm operations. Develop template agreements and pre-approved clauses and collaborate with the O&G Committee or General Counsel on complex matters.
  • Client Surveys & Engagement Materials: Serve as the primary contact for client surveys about various firm policies or compliance with client policies, censuses of personnel assigned to client matters, and other engagement-related questions. Coordinate responses with internal departments and client relationship attorneys. Review and update outside counsel guidelines and engagement letters, including periodic client-mandated updates.
  • New Hire Conflicts & Ethical Walls: Lead conflict checks for new hires and establish Intapp Walls as needed to ensure compliance with rules of professional conduct. Draft and circulate communications to confirm compliance and monitor wall configurations on an ongoing basis.
  • Policy, Training & Research: Partner with the General Counsel to research and provide guidance on conflicts and NBI matters. Develop and deliver training to attorneys and staff on compliance standards and firm policies across jurisdictions.
  • Metrics & Supervision: Generate reports from Intapp on NBI workflows, support client/matter analysis for the CBDMO, and supervise the Conflicts Analyst, including performance reviews.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: College degree and Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required. Must be an active member in good standing of a bar.
  • Experience: Two years of experience in a law firm as an attorney preferred. Additionally, at least two years of conflicts-related work in a law firm and experience that aligns with the skills and responsibilities above. Preference for experience with environmental and litigation practice and related conflicts issues.
  • Technical Skills: Preferred experience with Intapp Open for managing conflicts workflows (submissions, screening, approval, database updates), and Intapp Walls for creating and monitoring ethical screens. Preferred experience with iManage.
  • Knowledge: Exhibit strong understanding of the Rules of Professional Conduct and conflicts rules across multiple jurisdictions, including ability to research same. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of ethical, legal, and risk management matters. Knowledge of corporate structures, finance, and litigation processes, including an understanding of business organizations and potential conflicts.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form to explain complex legal and compliance matters to a range of stakeholders and to efficiently draft required language and communications relating to conflict resolution and outside counsel guidelines
  • Organized: Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities with keen attention to detail in a fast-paced legal environment.

Work Environment

B&D operates in a hybrid model, with current firm policy applicable to this position requiring at least a three day per week in-office presence in one of B&D’s physical offices (Washington, D.C. preferred for this position in light of proximity to other firm administrative functions). Some travel may be necessary for training and meetings.
