Job Summary:


The Mechanical Design Engineer selects and applies standard engineering principles and

procedures for design and development of new products or the modification of existing

products.


The Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand

customer project requirements, as well as improve product design, costs, and delivery schedules to meet company objectives and improve marketplace competitiveness.


The Mechanical Design Engineer will use their Design for Manufacturing (DFM) background to

review and disposition non-conformances of design as they occur during manufacturing and perform root cause (FMEA) analysis necessary to prevent errors in the future.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Utilizes knowledge of engineering design principles to generate sound designs that meet Prater Industries standard for innovative, reliable particle separation, size-reduction, and process solutions
  • Defines, develops, evaluates, and verifies designs to meet product requirements and cost targets by conducting design reviews and ensure proper objectives are established for the project by utilizing continuous improvement techniques
  • Responsible for new product design and modification of existing products.
  • Collaborates with the manufacturing team to turn designs into actual products by selecting the most efficient methods and cost-effective materials available for use and create step-by-step routing instructions & processes necessary for manufacturing and inspection of the product
  • Supports the entire project, including customer communication, engineering, manufacturing, and field commissioning
  • Participates or leads corrective action teams, to resolve product issues by performing root cause analysis and problem resolution related to assigned design responsibilities


  • Creates 3D models of components and 2D mechanical drawings, assembly prints and specifications that enable the production team to correctly and efficiently fabricate and assemble all engineering output
  • Ensures all As Built and Non-Conformances are updated on drawings and BOM's
  • Performs any other associated job-related duties as assigned by management

Education and Experience:


  • 3+ years of design experience in a manufacturing or mechanical design environment
  • 3+ years proficiency in Solid Works or similar software
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent related experience.
  • Experience with database management tools such as PDM works a plus
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals including machine design, manufacturing processes, dimensioning/GD&T, ferrous and nonferrous materials, BOM's and item masters,
  • Proficient Computer skills: 3D modeling, 2D drawings, Autocad/Draftsight, ERP system, Microsoft Office


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to endure long periods of desk related time with heavy phone work
  • Excellent manual dexterity: ability to perform keyboard functions for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 15+ pounds
