Position Summary

A Grower is responsible for ensuring crops are of the highest quality that are grown to pre-determined specifications, providing direct supervision to their assistant growers, establishing sound cultural practices, and providing a safe environment for the growing staff as well as for the general workforce. The ability to prioritize and solve problems, handle constructive criticism, and manage with ethical demeanor are traits that are sought for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crop Culture / Overall Plant Health and Knowledge
    1. Irrigation and Fertilization: Knowing and understanding specific irrigation and fertilization systems to achieve accurate applications in a defined set of parameters
      • Monitors and reports Ec and pH daily
      • Mixes and applies the correct rates (ppm) of fertilizer
      • Recognizes crop requirements as it relates to environmental influences
    2. IPM-Integrated Pest Management: understands and implements any and all available resources to maintain a pest population to desirable threshold
    3. PGR- Plant Growth Regulators – Recognizes and implements a comprehensive PGR program through 5 processes: chemical choice, application within the crop cycle, plant physiology within the crop schedule, time of application and checking various controls.
  • Trials
    1. Follow trial guidelines
    2. Exert proper controls
    3. Exercise proper upkeep and follow through provide documentation through written hypothesis, results and conclusion
    4. Create photo documentation to be included in the trail presentation
  • Understanding Schedules
    1. Must be able to stay within preset parameters
    2. Updates schedules on a constant basis
    3. Be able to recognize proper growth within set schedules
  • Basic understanding of Plant Physiology
  • Personnel
    1. Select, Develop, Train, and Retain assistant growers according to their job description.
    2. Proactive preparedness
    3. Manage respectful of company policy
    4. Ability to resolve conflicts consistently and communicate issues to the Head Grower/Director
    5. Create and maintain a culture of safety
  • Miscellaneous
    1. Recognizes electrical/mechanical issues and reports them immediately.
    2. Maintains list of maintenance needs.
    3. Have a thorough working knowledge of greenhouse machinery and processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) preferred and a minimum of 5 years of experience with another commercial greenhouse; OR
  • 6 months in training and completed all parameters of Grower in Training evaluation
  • Flexible Hours: Weekend, Holiday and Overtime hours may be required.
  • Basic Office 365 working knowledge, including but not limited to Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Be willing to obtain North Carolina Pesticide License
  • Communication skills and Interpersonal Communication Skills (reading, writing, speaking)- must be sufficient to interact with a diverse group of people.

Job Setting & Physical Demands

This position is primarily outdoors but may be required to work between locations and within an indoor office environment for administrative duties, which may require the use of computers and standard office equipment. Fluency to read, write, and understand the English language is required. Must be able to work in all outdoor elements, including dust and allergens. Position requires long-term ability for standing, sitting, squatting, stooping, bending, reaching, and twisting on a regular basis to fulfill essential duties. Ability to use fine motor skills, such as pinching, squeezing, and pulling. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds repetitively for full shift without assistance. Candidate must have the ability to certify and operate all machinery necessary within the department and across the facility. Candidates must also be able to utilize all chemicals required within the Horticulture department as assigned and follow all safety protocols.

Candidate must be flexible to work around the business needs schedule.
