Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Legal Accounting Clerk to join our law firm's accounting team. This is an early-career, transaction-posting and financial data-entry position, not a traditional staff accountant or full-cycle bookkeeping role.

Working under the direction of the Accounting/Billing Manager, the Legal Accounting Clerk will be responsible for accurately entering and posting financial transactions, assigning appropriate General Ledger (GL) codes, and properly identifying whether expenses are firm expenses or costs associated with a specific client or legal matter.

The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in basic accounting principles, strong attention to detail, and approximately 1–2 years of relevant experience or equivalent accounting education and training.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Accurately enter and post financial transactions into the firm's accounting system.
  • Assign appropriate General Ledger (GL) codes to invoices, receipts, and other financial transactions.
  • Review supporting documentation to determine the appropriate account and expense classification.
  • Distinguish between law firm operating expenses and client/case-related expenses.
  • Post case-related expenses to the appropriate client and matter.
  • Ensure transactions are posted to the correct GL account, client, and/or matter.
  • Process and enter invoices, receipts, and other financial documentation in a timely manner.
  • Review entries for accuracy, completeness, and proper coding.
  • Identify missing information, unclear charges, or questionable coding and bring them to the attention of the Accounting/Billing Manager.
  • Follow established procedures for transaction posting and expense classification.
  • Assist with routine transaction reviews and basic reconciliations as directed.
  • Maintain organized records and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and firm financial information.
  • Perform other related data-entry and bookkeeping duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Approximately 1–2 years of bookkeeping, accounting, accounts payable, or financial data-entry experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and General Ledger (GL) coding.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Comfortable performing detailed, transaction-based data entry.
  • Ability to distinguish between general firm expenses and client/case-related expenses.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and instructions.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to recognize when a transaction requires clarification and appropriately escalate the issue to the Accounting/Billing Manager.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial and client information professionally.

Law firm or legal accounting experience is a plus. Training will be provided on the firm's specific procedures and legal matter accounting requirements.

This Position Is Not a Traditional Accounting Role

This position is primarily focused on accurate financial data entry and transaction posting. It does not require extensive accounting experience or responsibility for the firm's overall accounting function.
