Location: Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Work Schedule: Rotating shifts averaging 40 hours per week; 8–12 hour shifts including weekdays, weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays as assigned

Position Summary

The Staff Pharmacist provides pharmaceutical services in both inpatient and ambulatory pharmacy settings. The pharmacist collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, accurate, and effective medication therapy. Responsibilities include medication verification, sterile compounding, pharmaceutical calculations, medication dispensing, quality assurance, and clinical consultation while maintaining compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Review, interpret, and verify medication orders for accuracy, dosing, allergies, contraindications, interactions, and therapeutic appropriateness.
• Dispense medications including controlled substances according to pharmacy policies and accepted standards of practice.
• Perform advanced pharmaceutical calculations for intravenous admixtures and complex parenteral nutrition preparations.
• Prepare, compound, verify, label, and dispense medications accurately.
• Maintain compliance with controlled substance security, hazardous medication handling, and quality assurance procedures.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize medication therapy outcomes.
• Participate in education and training of pharmacy technicians, residents, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Serve as Code Blue responder when assigned during designated shifts.
• Rotate between inpatient and ambulatory pharmacy locations based on operational needs.
• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with applicable pharmacy regulations.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college or university.
• Current, unrestricted pharmacist license in the United States.
• Minimum one year of inpatient pharmacy experience within the previous two years following graduation.
• Experience reviewing medication orders and performing clinical verification.
• Knowledge of sterile compounding and intravenous admixture preparation.
• Strong understanding of controlled substance regulations and pharmacy compliance standards.
• Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hospital or academic medical center pharmacy experience.
• Experience working within military or federal healthcare environments.
• Experience with automated pharmacy dispensing systems and electronic health records.
• Prior experience rotating between inpatient and outpatient pharmacy operations.
