Position Summary

\n

Provides services to NMSBVI students including diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, program management and consultation to enhance students’ academic potential in the education and residential setting.

\n


\n

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/COMPENTENCIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

\n


\n

1. Demonstrates professional knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of communication disorders by:

\n

    \n
  1. Utilizing knowledge of the unique learning needs of the student with Blindness/VI to develop IEP goals and objectives, determine service delivery model, and level of speech and language related service for students.
  2. \n

  3. Demonstrating an understanding of FERPA, IDEA and other laws pertaining to special education and students with visual impairments including multiple impairments.
  4. \n

  5. Demonstrating an understanding of the language differences found in students with limited access to visually-dependent concepts.
  6. \n

  7. Establishing individualized oral motor programs as needed.
  8. \n

\n

2. Uses appropriate techniques for the continuous assessment of student progress by:

\n

    \n
  1. Utilizing a variety of assessment tools and strategies that address the unique language needs of the student with Blindness/VI as well as multiple impairments.
  2. \n

  3. Using information gained from on-going assessment for individual student goal setting, instructional planning and service delivery.
  4. \n

  5. Maintaining documentation/student work samples.
  6. \n

  7. Participating in interdisciplinary/ trans-disciplinary assessments.
  8. \n

  9. Communicating student progress effectively with classroom teams, families and others, as appropriate.
  10. \n

  11. Using effective methods for evaluating student performance and integrating evaluation into instructional strategies.
  12. \n

\n

3. Manages the learning environment to allow students to attain their individual goals and objectives by:

\n

    \n
  1. Working with teachers to develop learning environments that maximize opportunities for the use of and expansion of communication.
  2. \n

  3. Utilizing a multi-sensory approach that addresses the unique learning style of each student.
  4. \n

  5. Utilizing environmental adaptations that support learning for the individual student.
  6. \n

  7. Expanding communication opportunities across all learning environments.
  8. \n

  9. Support the educational team in the use of technology that supports language use in multiple environments.
  10. \n

  11. Recognizing and reinforcing desirable behaviors and incorporating appropriate motivational techniques.
  12. \n

  13. Promoting respect and positive interpersonal relationships among students.
  14. \n

\n

4. Demonstrates the skills required to plan for and provide speech and language therapy for students with blindness/VI including:

\n

    \n
  1. Providing opportunities for new language and concepts to show up in play/work and other interactions.
  2. \n

  3. Utilizing best practice methods of instruction that specifically support the understanding of, development of, and expansion of language.
  4. \n

  5. Checking for student understanding; monitoring progress; providing expanded learning opportunities.
  6. \n

  7. Articulating the importance of creative expression in children’s development.
  8. \n

  9. Facilitating communication and problem-solving skills between peers.
  10. \n

\n

5. Establishes routines and procedures for managing cases, time, and student records by:

\n

    \n
  1. Maintaining progress notes, filing Medicaid paperwork, providing schedule to classrooms, etc.
  2. \n

  3. Maintaining student speech/ language records.
  4. \n

  5. Providing therapy as determined by each student’s IEP.
  6. \n

  7. Planning and using case management techniques and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated IEP goals.
  8. \n

  9. Making necessary timely arrangements for materials, equipment and supplies that are needed to implement individual progress.
  10. \n

  11. Effectively utilizing time management techniques in scheduling conferences, evaluations and appointments outside of individualized therapy time.
  12. \n

\n

6. Communicates accurately and effectively by:

\n

    \n
  1. Demonstrating commitment to each student’s educational team through problem-solving, clear communication, and cooperation with the team process.
  2. \n

  3. Articulating the unique needs of each student in the area of language.
  4. \n

  5. Providing language expertise in the area of augmentative communication and technology.
  6. \n

  7. Providing information about and support to each student across all learning environments.
  8. \n

  9. Providing training to staff in needed areas in order to ensure that each student’s individualized program is supported across all learning environments. x
  10. \n

\n

7. Develops, implements and evaluates individual students’ instructional program that addresses IEP goals and objectives by:

\n

    \n
  1. Recognizing and building on student’s strengths and interests to develop measurable goals and objectives.
  2. \n

  3. Demonstrating an understanding of the sequence of language development and using that knowledge to provide appropriate goals and objectives for each student.
  4. \n

  5. Providing information about augmentative communication technology.
  6. \n

  7. Redefining goals periodically and making modifications in programming to address the changing needs of each child.
  8. \n

\n

8. Must be able to handle high-levels of stress satisfactorily and be congenial with other employees, parents, students and outside agencies at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

\n

    \n
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each competency satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • \n

\n

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

\n

    \n
  • Master's degree (MA) in Speech and Language Pathology, and related experience in Education is preferred.
  • \n

\n

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

\n

    \n
  • Licensed by the New Mexico Speech and Language Pathology Licensing Board and the New Mexico State Department of Education licensure. Required to become proficient in Braille, Level II. Participation in all NMSBVI required trainings.
  • \n

\n

LANGUAGE SKILLS

\n

    \n
  • Ability to communicate effectively at IEP meetings and staff meetings.
  • \n

\n

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

\n

    \n
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic math.
  • \n

\n

REASONING ABILITY

\n

    \n
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • \n

\n

COMPUTER SKILLS

\n

    \n
  • Ability to operate a personal computer in a networked environment; competency in using the Windows operating system; proficiency using applicable portions of the Microsoft Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other programs as required.
  • \n

\n
