The Phlebotomist I supports a high-volume clinical laboratory by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards. This role involves working with patients across the age spectrum, providing clear and courteous explanations of procedures, and contributing to efficient workflow through troubleshooting, training support, and process improvement suggestions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, with a minimum of 30 blood draws per day.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, ensuring comfort and understanding.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Package specimens for transport and store samples at the required temperature in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Work with patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, adapting communication and collection techniques to meet individual needs.
  • Float between Patient Service Center (PSC) and In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) sites as required to support coverage and workflow.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with established procedures.
  • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and documentation tools.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Attend and complete annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide courteous customer service, and read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood drawing using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience performing a minimum of 30 blood draws per day.
  • Strong skills in specimen collection, handling, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to protocol.
  • Ability to collect various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for recording data, updating information, and handling basic documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients from pediatrics to geriatrics, providing clear explanations and courteous service.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when matching requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and related safety standards.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in both patient service centers and in-office phlebotomy sites, with flexibility to float between locations.
  • Strong customer service skills, including professional telephone etiquette and the ability to address patient and client inquiries.
  • Ability to support workflow improvements by identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and making recommendations.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and patient focus.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and stay current with departmental procedures and regulatory changes.

Work Environment

The Phlebotomist I works in a fast-paced clinical laboratory and patient service environment that includes both Patient Service Centers and in-office phlebotomy locations. The role involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and requires regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen collection containers and tubes. Specimens must be handled, labeled, centrifuged, split, frozen, and stored according to strict protocols and temperature requirements to maintain integrity for transport and testing. The position requires adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and participation in annual departmental training. Work involves standing for extended periods, performing a high volume of blood draws each day, and using computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite, to update patient information and record maintenance data. The environment emphasizes accuracy, safety, and courteous patient service while supporting efficient workflow across multiple sites.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
