GENERAL DESCRIPTION/PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Manager, Agriculture, participates in the agricultural management trainee program. The trainee will rotate through all pineapple operating departments including land preparation, planting, irrigation, spray, harvesting, packing and shipping and agricultural engineering. Training will also include the coffee and cacao agricultural and processing operations. The trainee will work with department supervisors long enough to assume responsibility for their functions as a back-up supervisor.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION

-Position will involve training in all phases of Hawaii-based pineapple and diversified agricultural operations, including coffee and cacao production.

-Participates in land preparation activities including plowing, disking, sub soiling, and other tillage practices. Trainee will participate in field survey and block layout activities. Trainee will oversee the laying of mulch paper and application of soil fumigants. Ensures documentation of all activities including chemical compliance in accordance with worker protection standards.

-Oversees gathering of plant material including identification of material removed. Assigns employees areas to be planted and provides equitable and sufficient supplies of planting material to planters. Ensures quality of planting by visual checks and maintains records of incentive pay program

-Oversees irrigation activities including installation of ground and surface irrigation pipes. Participates in application of drip irrigation chlorine and pesticide injections and supervises overhead sprinkler irrigation activities. Oversees weed and erosion control at dams, basins and ditches that are included as contract services.

-Participates in boom spray application of insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and crop control chemicals including set-up, maintenance of equipment and documentation functions.

-Participates in supervision of all field activities related to fresh fruit harvesting, transportation, fruit estimation and forcing. Schedules manning, labor delivery, conveyor operations and trucking.

-Oversees activities related to the fresh fruit packing plant including fresh fruit packing, chilled cut, and juice processing, and shipping operations.

-Participates in Agricultural Engineering/Shop functions to gain understanding of all company equipment and infrastructure.

-Participates in overseeing the procurement, construction, installation, maintenance and repair of agricultural and processing equipment, electrical and water systems, and company facilities.

-Assists with the development and administration of the operating budget. Participates in agricultural cost control programs to ensure budget goals are achieved.

-Ensures the administration of the collective bargaining agreement is in compliance with company policies and practices.

-Ensures the maintenance of safe and healthful working conditions for employees in accordance with company policies and programs and federal/state regulations.

-Attains Certified Pesticide Applicators License including fumigation and chemigation endorsements

-Assists Manager, Agriculture with upgrades and documentation of all agricultural practices

-Performs special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS
-Oral and written communication skills.
-Must possess valid driver’s license with clean abstract.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
-Bachelor’s degree in agricultural or manufacturing discipline or five years progressively responsible supervisory experience, of which two are in agri-business. Must have valid driver’s license and computer skills. Excellent communication skills required.
