About Camp And The Role

Camp Pennyroyal, a 180-acre Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana overnight camp near Owensboro, KY, serves Girl Scouts in grades 4–12 with traditional activities like boating, archery, and ropes courses. Programs are led by paid staff and volunteers.

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana seeks a full-time Assistant Waterfront Counselor to help ensure an outstanding summer camp experience. This role supports the Waterfront Director with swimming and boating programs, beachfront areas, and equipment maintenance; supervises staff and campers; teaches boating and swimming; and maintains safety standards while providing a fun, positive waterfront experience. The position also supports daily water and non-water programs and fosters a healthy camp culture.

Staff receive room, board, and most meals, along with a supportive community environment. Seasonal salary is $2,758. Camp runs May 22–July 14.

Responsibilities

● Ensure safety of campers and staff using swimming and boating equipment
● Assist in training unit staff for boating and swimming activities
● Conduct routine checks of equipment, facilities, and programs; report maintenance needs
● Support unit staff and participate in unit activities and all-camp events when the waterfront is closed
● Teach swimming and boating lessons
● Interact daily with campers and provide constant supervision in group and emergency settings
● Perform other duties as assigned

General Accountabilities

● Support the Waterfront Director with daily operations, schedules, routines, camper behavioral management, and staff task delegation
● Ensure equipment is in working order before opening swimming or boating areas
● Supervise children on water and land per GSK policies
● Assist with campers in unit and all-camp activities when not assigned to the waterfront
● Identify opportunities for group problem-solving
● Communicate camper and unit needs with Waterfront Director and Unit Leader
● Maintain confidentiality and professionalism
● Promote respect for diversity among campers and staff
● Provide clear instruction to participants of all ages
● Manage physical resources responsibly
● Provide exemplary customer service
● Perform other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Non-traditional and long work hours are expected. The Assistant Waterfront Counselor typically receives breaks between sessions. The Assistant Waterfront Counselor is always on call when campers are on property.

Long hours; on-call when campers are present; private quarters; outdoor work in varied weather; assist with ropes and waterfront; walk/hike daily on uneven terrain.

Daily exposure to various weather conditions, plants, and animals.

Walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.

Daily swimming, boating, and life guarding in lake water.

Must have interpersonal skills/behaviors (i.e. working with individuals with a range of moods & behaviors in a tactful, congenial personal manner).

REQUIREMENTS

Current certifications in American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED, and Waterfront Life-guarding;

1 year each of childcare/youth program, supervisory, and administrative experience;

Age 18+;

Strong communication and organizational skills;

Valid driver's license;

Swimming proficiency;

Must pass background checks, complete required forms, support Girl Scout mission, and promote diversity and safety.
