Job Description

Role Overview

A Solar Field Technician is responsible for visiting residential or commercial properties to collect detailed technical, structural, and electrical data needed to design and permit solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. This role may also perform service service visits to inspect and diagnose existing solar systems and ensure they are operating correctly. The technician helps ensure installations are safe, code-compliant, and accurately documented before and after construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site surveys for solar PV installations (residential and/or commercial)
  • Access residential rooftops and attic spaces to collect structural and electrical information needed for system design
  • Measure roof dimensions, pitch, azimuth, and structural conditions
  • Identify roofing materials and assess roof age and integrity
  • Photograph roofs, electrical equipment, attic spaces, and grounding systems
  • Inspect electrical service panels, meters, disconnects, and main service equipment
  • Verify utility interconnection points and service ratings
  • Confirm compliance with AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and utility requirements
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including the proper use of ladders, personal protective equipment (PPE), and fall-protection equipment when required
  • Document setbacks, fire access pathways, and code-required clearances
  • Identify potential installation challenges and propose design solutions
  • Upload clear, accurate site data, measurements, photos, and notes to design and project management systems
  • Perform field service visits to inspect and diagnose solar system issues when required
  • Review Tesla system monitoring and identify potential production or communication issues
  • Document service findings, photos, and notes for internal teams and escalate issues when necessary
  • Communicate findings clearly to design, engineering, and permitting teams

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of solar PV systems and components or willing and able to be trained on all material
  • Familiarity with Tesla Energy products including Tesla Inverter, Powerwall, Gateway, and Tesla monitoring platform (preferred)
  • Ability to read basic electrical diagrams and construction drawings (preferred)
  • Ability to use basic electrical testing tools such as a multimeter to verify voltage and system operation
  • Knowledge of NEC, local building codes, and fire codes (preferred)
  • Proficient with measurement tools and mobile data-collection apps
  • Comfortable working at heights and accessing rooftops
  • Drone Operating for overhead picture when required
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification (preferred)
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Comfortable communicating with homeowners during site surveys and service visits

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to safely climb ladders, walk on residential rooftops with varying pitches, and access attic spaces when required
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Work in various weather conditions
  • Comfortable working on roofs, in attics, and in outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and sun exposure
