Job DescriptionJob Summary:
The Network Operations Engineer is responsible for the performance, reliability, and operational integrity of i3 Broadband’s network infrastructure, including access, transport, and service delivery platforms. This role goes beyond monitoring and basic troubleshooting to include advanced diagnostics, root cause analysis, automation, and continuous improvement of network operations.
The ideal candidate is a highly technical professional who can operate as a Tier 2/3 escalation point, lead incident response, and proactively identify opportunities to enhance network stability, scalability, and customer experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Monitoring & Operational Excellence
- Provide advanced monitoring and operational support of complex network environments, including fiber access (GPON/XGS-PON), IP/MPLS transport, voice, and video services
- Utilize and optimize network monitoring platforms to ensure high availability and performance SLAs are consistently met
- Identify trends and anomalies in network behavior and take proactive action to prevent service degradation
Incident Management & Escalation
- Lead real-time incident response and assume technical ownership during network outages or degradation events
- Perform advanced troubleshooting using network analysis tools (packet capture, flow analysis, telemetry)
- Drive root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective/preventative actions
- Escalate and coordinate with Engineering, Vendors, and Field Operations as required
Troubleshooting & Technical Support
- Troubleshoot complex Layer 1–3 issues across LAN/WAN, routing, switching, optical, and access networks
- Support and resolve issues related to high-speed data, VoIP, and IP video services
- Act as a Tier 2/3 escalation point for internal teams and customers
Engineering Support & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Network Engineering to support:
- Network upgrades, migrations, and expansions
- Implementation of new technologies and services
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and methods of procedure (MOPs)
- Identify and implement automation opportunities to improve operational efficiency
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate incident records, network documentation, and operational runbooks
- Generate reports on network performance, incident trends, and SLA compliance
- Contribute to knowledge base development and operational best practices
Leadership & Mentorship
- Serve as a technical leader during major incidents and maintenance events
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- 3-6+ years of experience in Network Operations, NOC, or Network Engineering environments is required
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related technical field preferred
- Experience in ISP, telecom, or broadband environments strongly preferred
- CCNA/CCNP, JNCIA/JNCIP, Nokia NRS I/II, or equivalent preferred
- Relevant certifications in fiber, VoIP, or network operations are a plus
Skills and Competencies:
Core Networking Knowledge
- Strong understanding of:
- OSI model and protocol stack
- TCP/IP, VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP preferred)
- Layer 2/Layer 3 switching and routing concepts
- Experience with:
- Fiber access technologies (GPON, XGS-PON preferred)
- VoIP, SIP, and IP video delivery platforms
- Network monitoring and telemetry tools
Troubleshooting & Tools
- Proficiency with:
- Packet analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark)
- Network diagnostics and circuit testing tools
- Ticketing and incident management systems
- Ability to troubleshoot across multiple network layers and domains
Automation & Systems (Preferred but Strongly Desired)
- Basic to intermediate experience with:
- Scripting (Python, Bash, or similar)
- Network automation tools (Ansible, APIs, etc.)
- Familiarity with system integrations and monitoring enhancements
Working Conditions:
- This position is based in an in-office Network Operations Center (NOC) environment and requires regular, on-site attendance
- Requires the ability to sit and work at a computer workstation for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours per shift)
- Work is performed in a 24/7 operational environment, which may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts
- Must be able to maintain focus and respond quickly in a fast-paced, high-availability environment
- Requires the ability to monitor multiple screens and systems simultaneously for extended periods
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, during routine operations and high-pressure incidents
- Must be able to participate in on-call rotations and respond to critical issues outside of normal scheduled hours, as needed
- Occasional requirement to work extended hours during network outages, maintenance windows, or emergency situations
- Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office setting with standard office and technical equipment
- May require collaboration with remote teams, field technicians, and vendors during incident response and service restoration
