RECREATION SPECIALIST

Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Specialist is responsible for the coordination of youth programs, including the development, supervision, program registration, activity planning, scheduling of facility use, staff scheduling and reception. Responsible for providing administrative assistance to the Recreation Supervisors, Assistant Recreation Managers, and Recreation Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans, organizes and conducts recreation activities for a wide variety of age groups attending programs. Programs include, but are not limited to, youth and adult sports, R.E.C Van, youth break camps, seniors, aquatics, special events and facility rental programs.

Implements activities and provides general supervision over recreation programs including the use of equipment and use of an assigned area or program. Assists in general maintenance and daily operations of program and facilities.

Uses computer for research, registration, program schedules, communication and file maintenance.

Maintains records of registration, emergency forms, prepares program plans and activities, and prepares and maintains other related program documents.

Assists Assistant Recreation Managers and Recreation Supervisors with various administrative tasks for facility rentals, aquatics, cash handling, special interest classes, youth or adult sports, youth break camps, special events, seniors and marketing or department administration.

Assists with the recruiting, hiring and training of site staff.

Assists Supervisors with the purchase, distribution, storage and maintenance of supplies and equipment.

Assists in the preparation and administration of the budget for recreation programs.

Effectively communicates program and activity schedules with parents, schools and staff in a timely manner.

Troubleshoots any concerns that may occur during program.

Acts as a Recreation Leader, Senior Recreation Leader, Custodian/Security, Lifeguard, or Site Leader when needed to fulfill program responsibilities or other duties as required.

Communicates effectively and tactfully. Develops positive working relationships with participants, parents/guardians, volunteers, staff, school personnel and staff at other agencies.

Must be able to perform physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods of time.

Performs work under various weather conditions.

Works harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.

Greets public, answers questions and directs them to proper personnel if necessary.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of and skilled in: working with youth and adults in recreation activities and/or facility rentals, customer service, verbal and written communication, and effective use of email, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Publisher. Experience in the use of recreation software is highly desirable.

Ability to: organize and conduct groups of all sizes, make quick and accurate judgment calls, establish and maintain positive relationships with the public, schools, volunteers and other employees, follow oral and written directions and schedules; read and write English, maintain vehicle for consistent use for travel to various locations every day.

Physical Requirements: must be able to perform physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods of time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 18 years old. Equivalent to graduation from high school. Completion of a two-year degree with an emphasis on Recreation, Early Childhood Education, or other related field is desired. Two years’ experience in recreation, facility rentals or a related field is desired. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of the college degree requirement.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

Required to obtain the American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate or be willing to take a class in order to receive certificate. Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor including CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) Instructor, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator are highly desired.

SCHEDULE/HOURS

Approximately 15-25 hours/week. Hours vary depending on program needs. May be required to work unusual hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.


COMPENSATION/STATUS

$21.40 – 22.40 per hour. Non-exempt
