Custom Crating, Box Making, and Packaging Associate

Position Summary
We're looking for a Custom Crating, Box Making, and Packaging Associate to build custom wooden crates and boxes and design protective packaging solutions for a wide range of items. This role requires hands-on craftsmanship, strong attention to detail, and the judgment to determine the right materials and methods for each unique shipment. Prior experience in custom crating, box making, carpentry, or a related trade is a plus — but we're happy to train the right candidate who has less experience but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build custom wooden crates, boxes, cases, and pallets tailored to the size, weight, and fragility of each item
- Measure and cut custom corrugated and wood boxes to size for individual items and shipments
- Apply appropriate packing materials (foam, bubble wrap, moisture barrier, cushioning, blocking and bracing) to protect items during transit
- Measure, cut, and assemble crating and box-making materials using hand and power tools (panel saw, nail guns, drills, box cutters, etc.)
- Properly label, seal, and prepare packages, boxes, and crates for shipment
- Load and secure crates and freight for pickup or delivery, including safe use of pallet jacks, hand trucks, and other material-handling equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper storage and disposal of materials and scrap
- Communicate with the store team on job timelines, material needs, and special handling requirements
- Follow all safety procedures and company quality standards on every job
- Assist with other packing, shipping, and store operations tasks as needed
Qualifications
- Prior experience in custom crating, box making, carpentry, woodworking, cabinetry, or a similar hands-on trade preferred, but not required — we will train candidates with less experience who show strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn
- Comfortable working with, or willing to learn, hand and power tools (saws, drills, nail guns, box cutters, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail and pride in high-quality, precise work
- Ability to read, add and subtract basic fractions and work from dimensions accurately
- Good problem-solving skills — able to figure out the right packing approach for unusual or challenging items
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work well both independently and as part of a team
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to [50–75] lbs regularly, with occasional heavier lifting as a team
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work with tools for extended periods
- Comfortable working in a shop/warehouse environment
Work Environment
This is a hands-on, in-shop position based at our Elkridge, MD location, with occasional local travel for on-site packing or crating at customer locations as needed.
