The Lead Mechanic is a senior-level technician responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a fleet of passenger vehicles and heavy construction equipment. This position not only performs advanced mechanical work but also provides leadership and technical oversight to junior staff. The Lead Mechanic helps coordinate daily workflow, manages service schedules, ensures safety and quality compliance, and plays a key role in mobile service operations. This role is essential in supporting the reliability and efficiency of the organizations fleet operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead diagnostic and repair activities on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Perform advanced diagnostics and oversee complex repairs.
- Assist in assigning and coordinating work orders among mechanics and helpers.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and quality standards during all maintenance tasks.
- Provide training, mentorship, and oversight to junior staff and mechanic helpers.
- Operate and supervise deployment of the Mobile Service Truck, taking the lead on job site repairs.
- Maintain and manage shop and mobile inventory, including tools, parts, and consumables.
- Monitor and schedule preventive maintenance services across fleet assets.
- Liaise with vendors and suppliers for parts procurement as needed.
- Communicate equipment status and service needs to department heads or supervisors.
- Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, inspections, and service logs.
- Assist in any related areas as assigned by Warehouse Manager or Superintendents
SAFETY REQUIRMENTS
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
- Operate tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment according to manufacturer specifications and safety guidelines.
- Inspect and maintain tools and equipment regularly to ensure they are in safe working condition.
- Secure vehicles and equipment prior to inspection or repair (e.g., use of jack stands, wheel chocks).
- Follow safe lifting procedures for heavy parts and equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas free of hazards.
- Follow all traffic and environmental safety protocols when working at off-site locations.
- Use appropriate signage or barriers when working in public or shared spaces.
- Properly store, handle, and dispose of fuels, lubricants, batteries, and other hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Understand and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or equivalent. Technical diploma or trade certification in Automotive or Heavy Equipment Technology preferred.
- 510 years of hands-on experience in vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance.
- Valid drivers license and clean driving record required.
- CDL preferred (particularly for transporting or operating heavy equipment).
- Leadership or supervisory training is a plus.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Advanced diagnostics across vehicle and equipment systems.
- Working experience performing preventive maintenance scheduling and execution.
- Team leadership and workflow coordination.
- Safety and compliance auditing.
- System overhauls, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in documentation and service recordkeeping.
- Ability to travel frequently between islands with occasional overnight stay.
- Ability to work overtime, holidays and weekends as needed.
