Taos Charter School Launches Search for Next Executive Director
Leadership transition begins for high-performing K-8 public charter school
Taos, NM - [6] - Taos Charter School, a public K-8 charter school serving students and families across the Taos community, has announced the launch of a search for its next Executive Director following the retirement of current Executive Director Jeremy Jones at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
Jones' retirement will conclude 25 years of service to the school, including roles as teacher, gifted education instructor, Governing Council member and Executive Director since 2016. Over the course of his career at Taos Charter School, Jones has worked with more than 2,500 students and helped guide the school through a period of sustained academic success and organizational stability.
"Taos Charter School exists because of the collective commitment of families, educators, staff and community members," Jones wrote in a letter to families announcing his retirement.
"Leadership at our school has never rested with one person; it is shared across a deeply capable and dedicated staff."
Chartered in 2001, Taos Charter School is recognized for its rigorous inquiry-based academic program, bilingual (English/Spanish) instruction and strong family engagement. The school currently serves approximately 218 students and has consistently achieved academic outcomes above state averages. Taos Charter School has been designated a "Spotlight School" by the New Mexico Public Education Department, reflecting sustained performance and accountability.
The Executive Director serves as Chief Executive Officer of the school, responsible for academic leadership, financial stewardship, operations, staff supervision, and community partnerships. The position reports directly to the school's Governing Council, a site-based body composed of parents, educators, and community members.
"Jeremy Jones' decades of service have helped shape Taos Charter School into the
strong, vibrant institution it is today," said Gina Gargone, Chair of the Governing Council.
"We are seeking a leader who will honor that foundation while guiding the school into its
next chapter."
Taos Charter School emphasizes whole-child education, combining strong academics with social-emotional learning, arts programming, physical education and bilingual instruction. With high staff retention, the school maintains a personalized learning environment that supports student success.
The Executive Director will oversee an annual budget of approximately $3.3 million and lead a dedicated team of educators and staff. Candidates must hold (or be eligible for) a New Mexico administrative license and demonstrate experience in school leadership, budgeting, compliance and personnel management.
Applications are now being accepted and will remain open until the position is filled. The new Executive Director is expected to begin July 1, 2026.
