Key Responsibilities
- Preventative Maintenance (PM): Conduct regularly scheduled inspections to clean, lubricate, and adjust components according to manufacturer specifications.
- Diagnostic & Repair: Troubleshoot issues with hydraulic lift systems, electronic battery components, and mechanical locking mechanisms. Disassemble units to replace worn parts like motors, clutches, or wheels.
- Safety Compliance: Test and calibrate equipment to ensure it meets federal and state safety regulations to protect both patients and EMS staff from mechanical hazards.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed maintenance and repair logs for every unit to ensure a clear audit trail for regulatory compliance.
- Inventory Management: Research and order replacement parts from vendors and maintain a cost-effective inventory of essential repair materials.
- Staff Training: Demonstrate the correct use of equipment to paramedics and EMTs to prevent operator-induced damage and ensure patient safety.
Required Skills & Qualifications

- Technical Education: Often requires an associate degree in biomedical equipment technology, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift heavy equipment (often up to 50–100 lbs) and work in awkward positions, such as crouching or bending for long periods.
- Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose complex problems that are not immediately apparent, especially in modern power-load systems.
Work Environment
Technicians may work in a centralized repair shop, but frequently travel to EMS stations or hospitals to perform on-site repairs. Emergency "on-call" shifts are common to address equipment failures that sideline an ambulance.
