The Heavy Equipment Manager is responsible for overseeing the procurement, maintenance, logistics, and overall management of heavy construction equipment across all job sites. This role ensures that equipment is safe, reliable, and available to support ongoing and upcoming construction projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise, train, and evaluate a team of mechanics, technicians, and equipment handlers, as assigned.
- Provide direction and support to ensure safety, quality, and productivity standards are met.
- Promote a safety-first culture through active leadership and regular safety meetings.
- Mentor staff and support professional development within the equipment department.
- Oversee staffing needs, scheduling, and performance reviews for equipment personnel.
- Manage the full lifecycle of heavy equipment: acquisition, deployment, maintenance, and disposal.
- Schedule and track routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections to ensure equipment reliability and compliance.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory, usage, service history, and costs.
- Ensure compliance with all DOT, OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations.
- Develop and implement equipment utilization strategies to minimize downtime and costs.
- Coordinate with vendors for equipment rentals, parts, and services.
- Collaborate with project managers to forecast equipment needs and align equipment availability with project schedules.
- Develop and manage equipment budgets, including repair costs, replacement planning, and capital expenditures.
- Monitor fuel usage, maintenance costs, and operational efficiency.
- Recommend new equipment purchases or upgrades based on operational needs and cost-benefit analysis.
- Coordinate transportation of equipment between sites in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ensure all equipment is secured, stored, and transported safely and legally.
- Assist in planning site layouts for equipment staging and operation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Combination of office, equipment yard, and active construction sites.
- Fast-paced environment requiring attention to detail and adaptability.
- Must be able to inspect equipment in field conditions; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs; standing, walking, or climbing for extended periods.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent; degree or certification in logistics, supply chain, or a related field is a plus.
- Minimum 57 years of experience managing heavy equipment in a construction or industrial setting.
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electronics, and heavy construction machinery (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes).
- Strong understanding of OSHA and DOT regulations.
- Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) software preferred.
- Proficient with MS Office and equipment tracking software.
- Valid drivers license (CDL preferred).
