Job Description
Step inside the operations of a 2.1-million-square-foot historic federal landmark and see what it really takes to keep mission-critical facilities running.
This internship offers a rare, behind-the-scenes experience for students exploring careers in Facilities Management, Project Management, Engineering, or Skilled Trades. You'll work alongside experienced professionals who manage complex building systems, support federal agency missions, and keep one of the region's most iconic facilities operating every day.
If you're curious about how buildings really work, and want exposure beyond the classroom, this is your opportunity.
What You'll Do
- Support Real Projects: Assist the Facilities Project Manager with active projects, gaining insight into planning, coordination, and execution in a live environment.
- Learn from the Experts: Shadow Building Engineers, Mechanics, and Electricians to see how systems are maintained, troubleshot, and optimized in real time.
- Get Involved in Operations: Support day-to-day operations alongside leadership and see how large-scale facilities are managed efficiently and safely.
- Sit at the Table: Attend operational briefings and vendor coordination meetings to understand how decisions are made and work is scheduled without disrupting mission-critical activities.
What You'll Gain
- Real-World Exposure: Understand how facilities professionals manage mechanical, electrical, and infrastructure systems at scale.
- Cross-Functional Insight: Learn how Project Managers collaborate with engineers and trades to solve complex building challenges.
- Federal Facilities Experience: Gain exposure to the unique standards and requirements of operating high-security, historic government buildings.
- Professional Skills: Build confidence communicating technical information with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Your Own Project: Take ownership of a small facility improvement project, from planning through execution, with guidance from a mentor.
Who We're Looking For
- Current Student: Pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field.
- Curious & Motivated: Interested in learning how buildings operate behind the scenes and eager to explore a hands-on (but not labor-based) environment.
- Comfortable in the Field: Willing to walk large facilities and spend time in mechanical/industrial spaces.
- Strong Communicator: Able to engage with both technical teams and leadership.
- Tech-Savvy: Familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Must be able to pass a federal background check (HSPD-12) for building access.
This isn't just an internship, it's a front-row seat to a career in Facilities Management. You'll leave with real experience, industry exposure, and a clearer understanding of how your skills can translate into a high-impact, in-demand profession.
