You must be a current University of Florida Student to qualify for this internship. Preference is given to Beyond 120 class program students. This is an unpaid internship.

This position is a hybrid combination of the Rescue and Aquatic Biology Internships.

With Rescue we cannot predict when an animal will strand. You will be in the office if there is no field work. You will take turns monitoring the stranding hotline and deploying team members to respond.

While you may have an opportunity to respond to recover turtles that is not the only animal. You will have an opportunity for Necropsy, FHP Rehab, Turtle, Manatee and Dolphin Recoveries. You may help with Manatee rehab at CMA.

In Aquatic Biology you will care for our resident sea turtlres and over 100 different species of animals. Care includes diet preparation, cleaning habitats, obsserving medical procedures and feeding animals.

There should be no expectation of direct contact with the animals.

All work is conducted undera permit and all government regulations must be adhered to.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lift up to 50lbs to waist level - Frequently
    • Lift up to 20lbs to shoulders and above head – Occasionally
    • Walk/stand for long periods of time - Frequently
    • Maneuver safely on uneven terrain or in tight spaces - Frequently
    • Safely climb ladders when needed – Occasionally
    • Squat, bend, kneel, twist and reach - Frequently
    • Reach above the shoulders - Frequently
    • Push and pull larger equipment – Frequently
    • Work outdoors in all weather conditions and adapt to changing weather heat, high humidity, direct sunlight, rain, wind and outdoor conditions (insects, sand, etc.) – Frequently
    • Work indoors, under cover without air conditioning or heat – Frequently

SCHEDULE:

This internship has a minimum number of hours to satisfactorily complete the internship

  • 3 month internships 500 hours
  • 4 month internship 650 hours
  • 5 month internships 800 hours
  • 6 month internship 950 hours
