Heavy Truck Mechanic / Equipment Mechanic
Job Description
This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing the equipment and machinery that supports greenhouse and farm operations. You will work on a diverse fleet including farm tractors, spray wagons, golf carts, forklifts, and other heavy and light equipment to ensure everything operates safely and efficiently. The position is hands-on and fast-paced, and plays a critical part in keeping production running smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine service, diagnostics, and repairs on farm tractors, spray wagons, golf carts, forklifts, and other farm and greenhouse equipment to maintain optimal performance.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with small diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics, and related mechanical systems.
- Diagnose and repair 12-volt electrical systems, including wiring, components, and controls.
- Conduct regular inspections of equipment to identify potential problems, document findings, and prevent equipment failures.
- Perform preventive maintenance on diesel engines and heavy equipment according to established schedules and standards.
- Use a work order application to accurately track, document, and complete maintenance and repair tasks.
- Follow all safety protocols and operational standards while performing maintenance and repair activities.
- Collaborate with the maintenance team to prioritize work, coordinate repairs, and complete tasks efficiently.
- Operate equipment and obtain any required internal certifications for machinery within the department and across the facility.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, manuals, and technical documentation when troubleshooting and repairing equipment.
- Use standard hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to perform mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs.
- Support welding and fabrication tasks as needed to repair or modify equipment and components.
- Assist with other maintenance-related duties as assigned by management.
Essential Skills
- At least 5+ years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in farm, industrial, or heavy equipment maintenance.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience servicing and repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of small diesel engines, including diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance.
- Experience working on farm tractors and specialized greenhouse or agricultural equipment.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing 12-volt electrical systems.
- Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including troubleshooting and repair.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and equipment diagrams.
- Experience using standard hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
- Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate heavy machinery safely.
- Physical ability to frequently stand, sit, squat, bend, reach, and twist while performing job duties.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs unaided and up to 100 lbs with assistance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience as a maintenance technician in agricultural, industrial, or greenhouse settings.
- Background working with heavy equipment such as forklifts and other material-handling machinery.
- Experience with transmissions, brake systems, and engine components on heavy trucks or farm equipment.
- Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
- Comfort working with a digital work order or maintenance management application.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative maintenance team.
- Willingness to obtain any necessary internal machinery or equipment certifications.
- Capability to work at heights over 6 feet and in confined spaces when required.

Work Environment
This position is primarily outdoors, with some indoor tasks as needed, supporting greenhouse and farm operations. You will work in varying weather conditions and may be exposed to dust, allergens, and typical mechanical hazards associated with heavy equipment and machinery. The role requires frequent standing, sitting, squatting, bending, reaching, and twisting throughout the day. You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Work may involve heights over 6 feet and entering confined spaces when necessary. Availability for evenings and weekends is required based on business needs, particularly during peak seasons, contributing to a dynamic and production-focused environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of York, SC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
