Intellectual Property Associate Attorney – Patent Prosecution (Chemical Engineering & Materials Science)
Location(s): Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Philadelphia; Denver; Indianapolis; Minneapolis; Wilmington

Direct Counsel is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate to join a nationally respected firm with a strong presence across major U.S. cities. This position is focused on patent prosecution and offers a hybrid work model with two to three in-office days per week. The associate can be based in any of the firm's offices in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, or Wilmington.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle patent prosecution matters in the fields of chemical engineering and materials science.

  • Work on a range of technologies, including filtration systems, polymers, material science, and medical devices.

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications involving both chemical and mechanical subject matter.

  • Conduct patent searches and provide analysis where applicable.

Qualifications:

  • 1–3 years of relevant patent prosecution experience.

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science required.

  • Demonstrated experience with a range of technologies including filtration, polymers, and medical devices.

  • Strong writing and oral communication skills.

  • Admission to a state bar required; USPTO admission is a plus.

  • Strong academic credentials and a collaborative, client-focused mindset.

Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $175,000 – $255,000, commensurate with experience, location, and qualifications. Total compensation also includes discretionary and productivity bonuses, a comprehensive benefits package (health, life, disability insurance), and a 401(k) plan.
