About the Position
Alumitank, Inc. is seeking an experienced and dependable Heavy Fabricator to join our manufacturing team in Harvard, Illinois.
This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable working with heavy steel, welding and fabrication equipment, material-handling equipment, and rail operations. The Heavy Fabricator will fabricate, weld, cut, fit, and assemble steel components while also assisting with loading, unloading, material movement, and rail spur operations.
The ideal candidate has strong heavy steel fabrication and welding experience, takes pride in quality workmanship, and understands the importance of working safely in a demanding manufacturing environment.
What You'll Do
- Fabricate, assemble, and repair heavy steel components using blueprints, drawings, work orders, and specifications.
- Perform MIG and stick welding on heavy steel structures and components.
- Operate oxy-fuel torches to cut, bevel, heat, and prepare steel for fabrication.
- Measure, lay out, fit, grind, and assemble materials according to required specifications.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, grinders, saws, drills, and other fabrication equipment.
- Load, unload, lift, move, and transport heavy steel materials and equipment.
- Operate telehandlers, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment.
- Load and unload railcars and assist with rail spur operations.
- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets blueprint specifications and quality standards.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and promptly report mechanical or maintenance concerns.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist other departments as needed to support production and business operations.
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience welding and fabricating heavy steel.
- Experience with MIG and stick welding.
- Ability to safely operate oxy-fuel cutting equipment.
- Ability to read blueprints, fabrication drawings, and work specifications.
- Ability to accurately use a tape measure and other measuring equipment.
- Experience using grinders, saws, drills, hand tools, and power tools.
- Basic math skills, including fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to safely operate or learn to operate forklifts, telehandlers, and other heavy equipment.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Experience
- 3+ years of heavy steel fabrication and welding experience.
- Experience operating front-end loaders or similar heavy equipment.
- Experience working around railcars or rail spur operations.
- Forklift and crane experience.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Physical & Work Requirements
This is a physically demanding manufacturing position. Candidates must be able to:
- Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing 70 pounds or more.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, kneel, climb, crouch, reach, and work in awkward positions throughout the workday.
- Safely perform repetitive physical tasks involving heavy steel materials.
- Work both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
- Work safely in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Work around noise, dust, fumes, sparks, vibration, moving machinery, heavy equipment, and active rail operations.
- Wear all required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots, welding helmet, flame-resistant clothing, and other required protective equipment.
Schedule
This is a full-time, Monday–Friday, in-person position. Overtime may be required based on production schedules and rail delivery requirements, including occasional evenings and weekends.
Compensation
$28.00–$32.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
