Job Description

The County of Los Angeles is seeking a Senior Building Engineering Inspector to perform a wide range of construction inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, zoning ordinances, and County regulations. This role plays a critical part in protecting public safety and maintaining construction quality across residential and small commercial developments

Key Responsibilities


  • Conduct field inspections of site grading, building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems for single-family dwellings and minor commercial or industrial buildings.
  • Review construction plans and specifications for building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical components to ensure code and ordinance compliance prior to inspections.
  • Assist with inspections of complex and multi-story structures under the guidance of senior inspectors.
  • Require and initiate corrections to construction work related to structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and related systems to meet applicable codes.
  • Initiate soil tests when field conditions indicate potential soil instability.
  • Inspect rehabilitation and renovation projects to ensure compliance with current building codes and zoning requirements.
  • Perform business license inspections to verify adherence to County building laws and ordinances.
  • Process permit applications and respond to inquiries at public service counters.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and document code compliance activities.
  • File complaints against willful code violators and testify in court when required.
  • Travel routinely to inspection sites throughout the County using a motor vehicle.


Required Qualifications


  • Valid certification as a Combination Inspector or Commercial Combination Inspector, or equivalent, from a recognized code certification organization such as ICC, ICBO, IAPMO, or similar.
  • Certification must be in a code adopted and used by the County of Los Angeles.
  • Knowledge of building codes, zoning ordinances, and construction inspection practices.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Strong written communication skills for report preparation and documentation.
  • Ability to interact professionally with contractors, property owners, and the public.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience inspecting multi-story or complex building projects.
  • Familiarity with County of Los Angeles building laws and enforcement procedures.
  • Court testimony or enforcement experience related to building code violations.
