Job Summary:
The Automotive Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles. This includes performing routine maintenance, identifying mechanical and electrical problems, and making necessary adjustments or repairs. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, possesses strong problem-solving skills, and is committed to providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnosis:
- Perform thorough inspections of vehicles to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
- Utilize diagnostic tools and software (scanners, multimeters, etc.) to accurately pinpoint faults.
- Interpret diagnostic codes and technical manuals to understand problems.
- Communicate diagnostic findings clearly to service advisors and/or customers.
- Repair and Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance services such as 'K' Services, filter changes, brake service and fluid changes.
- Repair or replace worn or malfunctioning parts, including steering suspension, engine components, electrical components modules and relays, brakes, heating and cooling systems, exhaust related and other.
- Conduct vehicle alignments.
- Perform module programming on a factory level (training included)
- Ensure all repairs are completed efficiently and to manufacturer and industry standards.
- Rolling tool box with necessary hand and power tools to perform work on Import Vehicles. Tool box must be no less than 7 drawer and must fit all tools.
- Technical Skills:
- Read and interpret technical diagrams, service manuals, and work orders.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of automotive technology, including new models and diagnostic procedures.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as specialized automotive equipment.
- Shop Operations & Safety:
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Properly dispose of hazardous materials (oil, coolant, batteries, etc.).
- Customer Service (often in conjunction with Service Advisors):
- Explain repairs and maintenance needed to customers in understandable terms (if required).
- Ensure customer satisfaction with the work performed.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education & Certification:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Post-secondary automotive training or vocational certificate (e.g., from a trade school or community college) is highly preferred but not necessary if confirmable professional work history exceeds 4 years.
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications are highly desirable and may be required for certain positions or pay grades. (e.g., A1-A8, L1).
- Manufacturer-specific training or certifications (e.g., BMW, Audi, VW, Porsche, JLR, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Subaru) can be a plus.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Experience:
- Proven experience as an automotive technician (experience level required will vary by position – from entry-level/apprentice to senior/master technician).
- Experience with a variety of vehicle makes and models.
- Experience with modern diagnostic equipment.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in using automotive repair tools and equipment.
- Good understanding of automotive electrical and electronic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina to lift heavy components (up to 50 lbs or more) and work in various positions (standing, bending, crouching).
- Basic computer skills for accessing service information and inputting data.
