RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is for a goal oriented, highly energetic, outgoing "people" person who can engage people of different backgrounds. The ideal person will create and maintain positive working relationships with program participants. He/she must be a self-starter committed to the mission, values, beliefs of BronxWorks and the Workforce Development department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Assistant Program Director to support the academic and workforce development goals of the EXCEL Adult Literacy and Workforce Development program.
- Provide basic education to adults and out-of-school youth while creating a nurturing and supportive environment
- Teach, develop, and help prepare adults to master subtests which consist of four sections of the GED Test which include, reading, writing and comprehension skills in the areas of: Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA*), Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies.
- Prepare lessons and instructional activities based on student interests, ability level, English proficiency, and other factors in the class
- Plan classwork and homework assignments to support students’ understanding of course objectives and basic skills for literacy
- Develop weekly class assessments to measure each student’s mastery level of benchmark skills and determine progress in the class
- Provide instruction to students using a variety of sound teaching methods, such as whole class instruction, collaborative practice, and independent task completion, while developing problem solving skills in adults
- Review progress with students throughout the year in individual meetings and discuss methods to help make improvements
- Create units of study based on common course objectives, best practices in education and tested skills on the GED assessment
- Maintain an orderly classroom during instruction and other times by establishing procedures for students and expectations for behavior
- Research, evaluate and assess adult literacy issues appropriate to adult literacy programs.

- Maintains confidentiality; have good time management & communication skills; have the ability to accept persons from differing backgrounds and economic situations; have patience; and basic Microsoft Office suite computer skills.
- Ensure stimulating creative classroom experiences to adults.
- Design and develop stimulating teaching material for adults.
- Evaluate and assess academic performance of each adult.
- Integrate role model experiences in adult literacy programs.
- Arrange workshops and other events to enhance confidence levels.
- Submit reports as required including monthly reports to supervisor.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by manager and leadership
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in adult literacy, ESOL or education or equivalent experience
- Completion of an internship in adult literacy education
- Certified literacy teacher
- Ability to work weekends, weekdays, and flex schedule if needed
- Two or more years of experience working with adult learners
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in education or a related field
- Proficiency in Spanish
