The Town of South Hill currently has a job opening for a Lead Facilities Maintenance Technician! South Hill is located just a few miles north of Lake Gaston and about 20 minutes east of Buggs Island Lake situated halfway between the capital cities of Richmond and Raleigh with both being approximately an hour away. Job duties include but are not limited to perform skilled mechanical and building trades work relating to maintenance and repairs of buildings, grounds, and equipment for the Town. Work may include supervision of a helper or a small crew of subordinate maintenance technicians. Responsible for maintenance work in a variety of installation, maintenance, preventative upkeep and repair projects, collection and disposal of trash, janitorial work and solid waste throughout the Town of South Hill Facilities. This position is under the direction of the Superintendent.

Responsible for the following:

Performs skilled trades including but not limited to carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical maintenance and repair tasks. Responsibilities include: scheduled inspections of all Town buildings, machinery, equipment/fixtures; scheduling and preparation of work orders and records, assuring that work is accomplished according to the work order as well as departmental, safety, state and federal standards, regulations and/or laws. Other duties include:

  • Inspect all Town buildings and machinery for proper working order on a scheduled monthly basis utilizing a checklist developed for that purpose; checklist must be signed and turned in to superintendent monthly;
  • Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of park buildings, adjacent areas, offices and restrooms daily or seasonal as needed or directed during the rest of the year;
  • Confer daily with superintendent in coordinating and implementing short and long term maintenance and repair projects; prioritize and complete work orders for all tasks;
  • Initiates and researches the preparation of all mechanical and maintenance repairs;
  • Perform a variety of tasks, including preparation work, involving carpentry, painting, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, masonry, building and equipment maintenance and upkeep;
  • Troubleshoot and complete repairs for HVAC, plumbing and electrical/mechanical malfunctions;
  • Install, repair and/or replace electrical receptacles, switches, light fixtures, ballasts, electrical wire, conduit; replace light bulbs;
  • Accurately research and diagnose malfunctions and recommend appropriate repair, including outsourcing of those repairs, using sound judgment considering cost effectiveness, time involved, and age and condition of equipment;
  • Assist in preparation of meeting rooms; arrange and move furniture, equipment and/or storage boxes as needed;
  • Maintain proper records and inventory for equipment, tools and work activities and supplies;
  • Responsible for the maintenance and security of all tools and equipment assigned or allocated;
  • Responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of work vehicle
  • Other tasks/duties as assigned.

Must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

  • Working knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities, including but not limited to carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to troubleshoot accurately diagnose malfunctions, provide maintenance suggestions and/or research possible maintenance repairs.
  • Ability to use sound judgement to determine if repairs can be done in-house properly or required to outsource those repairs/maintenance.
  • Ability to safely use small common manual and electrical hand tools, specialized power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and work accurately from sketches, schematics and diagrams such as blueprints.
  • Able to complete tasks safely and accurately in an appropriate amount of time.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, outside contacts and the public.
  • Able to work independently or under direct supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative and have creativity when researching possible maintenance repairs.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
