Job Title: Chief Building Engineer

Location: Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC
Property Type: 273-Unit Residential Cooperative Mid-Rise


We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Engineer to lead the maintenance operations of our residential cooperative. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for a dynamic professional with a strong technical foundation and proven managerial experience. You will oversee a team of six maintenance engineers, ensure the smooth operation of all building systems, and serve as the technical authority for complex issues. The Chief Engineer reports to the General Manager and is a full-time, exempt, salaried position, employed by the Cooperative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a team of six maintenance engineers
  • Mentor, train, and evaluate staff performance
  • Conduct regular inspections of building systems and equipment
  • Maintain accurate records using BuildingLink
  • Oversee and execute preventative maintenance schedules
  • Prepare monthly reports for the General Manager and Board of Directors
  • Attend Building and Grounds Committee meetings
  • Manage HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security systems
  • Scope, bid, and oversee capital improvement projects
  • Maintain emergency preparedness and respond to alarms or crises
  • Provide after-hours support as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Engineering College or High School Diploma and/or equivalent certificates
  • DC Class 3 Steam Boiler Engineer
  • Certified Underground Storage Tank Operator, Class A/B
  • Driver’s License
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience at similar buildings in a maintenance/mechanic role
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret schematics and technical manuals and building drawings
  • Proficient in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems
  • Skilled with hand tools, power tools, meters, and gauges
  • Excellent planning, detailed oriented, and time management abilities
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and safety standards
  • Basic computer literacy with the ability to complete data entry tasks using Building Link, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Physically capable of lifting to 60 lbs. and climbing ladders up to 30 feet
