JOB IDENTIFICATION:
Job Title: Swim Instructor
FLSA Status: Part-time
Reports to Aquatics Director
Starting Pay: $18 per hour, may be increased based off prior experience
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Monroe County YMCA is seeking Swim Instructors to maintain a safe learning environment at the Monroe County YMCA aquatics facility. Responsibilities include teaching YMCA swim lessons focused on water adjustment, safety skills, and stroke development. Part-time staff must have at least 2 private lesson clients per month on a consistent basis or teach group lessons on a consistent basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Complete all required records and reports on schedule.
- Formulate daily lesson plans based on the YMCA of the USA swim lesson guidelines.
- Keep current accurate attendance and skill records.
- Have parents/participants complete instructor evaluation forms.
- Consistently attend swim lessons and get approval for substitutions.
- Complete accident and incident reports when appropriate.
- Communicate with parents.
- Be available before or after class to offer feedback on child’s progress to parents.
- Evaluate skill progress and give progress reports to parents at the end of lesson sessions.
- Conduct a well-organized class.
- Be on deck 15 minutes prior to class time to assist in pool preparation, talk to parents, and meet children.
- Put safety first!
- Use daily lesson plans.
- Be enthusiastic.
- Always get in the water.
- Be able to demonstrate and explain skills clearly.
- Integrate the YMCA’s philosophy of body, spirit, and mind.
- Contact Aquatic Coordinator with concerns.
- Notify Aquatic Coordinator if a student is absent for two consecutive days.
- Put equipment away after class.
- Attend all aquatic in-service training and staff meetings.
- Keep certifications current.
- Keep current on emergency procedures.
- Immediately advise the Aquatic Coordinator or lesson supervisor when you have students in your classes who do not belong there skill-wise. The students could be a level lower or higher. It is important to lightly retest your students especially that first day.
- Advise the Aquatic Coordinator or lesson supervisor when you have students in your classes who are not on your class rosters or when you have students on your class rosters who do not show up for classes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have and maintain current CPR, First Aid, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training.
- YMCA swim instructor or WSI preferred.
- Completion of Monroe County YMCA instructor training.
- Possess patience, tact, and good judgment.
- Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
