Position Overview
The SharePoint Systems Engineer provides full-lifecycle administration, maintenance, security, and modernization of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 or higher, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, and all associated applications across NIPR and SIPR environments. The role includes SQL Server administration, SharePoint on-premises upgrade planning/execution, and Azure/M365 hybrid integration. This position requires on-site presence and on-call availability to support mission-critical DoD operations.
Core Responsibilities
Cybersecurity & Vulnerability Management
Manage and maintain vulnerability remediation for SharePoint and SQL servers in accordance with DoD cybersecurity requirements, STIGs, and reporting.
Ensure compliance with RMF, patching cycles, and security hardening for Windows Server, SharePoint, and SQL Server.
Search, Services, and Farm Operations
Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain SharePoint Search Service Application, including crawl components, index partitions, and query performance.
Manage service applications, web applications, site collections, and Alternate Access Mappings (AAM).
Administer SharePoint farm features, WSP solutions, and service application topology.
Architecture, Deployment & Upgrades
Design and implement medium-scale SharePoint intranet/extranet farm topologies using Microsoft best practices.
Plan and execute SharePoint on-premises upgrades, including:
o SharePoint 2013 2016
o SharePoint 2016 2019
o Database attach upgrades, compatibility checks, and pre-upgrade remediation
o Farm topology redesign and capacity planning
Lead SharePoint/SQL Server migration activities, including content database migration, service application migration, and search topology rebuilds.
Plan, test, and deploy Service Packs, Cumulative Updates, and security patches for SharePoint and SQL Server.
SQL Server Administration (SharePoint-Focused)
Administer SQL Server instances supporting SharePoint farms, including:
o Database provisioning, configuration, and optimization
o Backup/restore strategies aligned with NIPR/SIPR requirements
o SQL AlwaysOn, clustering, and high-availability configurations
o Performance tuning (indexes, statistics, I/O optimization)
Collaborate with DBA teams to ensure monthly disaster recovery testing, database integrity checks, and compliance with DoD data-handling requirements.
Documentation & Configuration Management
Create and maintain NIPR/SIPR SharePoint and SQL Server infrastructure documentation, including architecture diagrams, deployment procedures, and service specifications.
Produce a comprehensive SharePoint Configuration Document covering hardware, OS/software versions, service accounts, IP schema, hostnames, SQL topology, and service application architecture.
Cross-Team Collaboration
Coordinate with Network Infrastructure, DBA, Cybersecurity, and Server Operations teams to resolve connectivity, DNS, load balancing, firewall, and database issues.
Support cross-functional troubleshooting for performance, authentication, and integration issues across the portal ecosystem.
Desired Experience & Technical Skills
Platform & Server Expertise
Experience with Microsoft Windows Server 2016 or higher.
Deep knowledge of SharePoint Server administration, farm configuration, and upgrade/migration processes.
Experience with SQL Server administration in a SharePoint environment (2016/2017/2019).
Strong understanding of Active Directory, DNS, certificates, and enterprise networking.
Cloud & Hybrid Skills
Experience with Azure administration and development, including hybrid identity and infrastructure integration.
Experience evaluating, planning, migrating, deploying, and managing Microsoft 365 services in hybrid or government environments.
Automation & Troubleshooting
Proficiency with PowerShell for SharePoint, SQL, and Windows Server automation.
Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and communicate network, database, and platform issues to peers and leadership.
Certifications / Experience Levels
Three (3) years experience as an Azure Administrator Associate.
Three (3) years experience as a Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.
Required Qualifications
Active Secret Clearance.
On-site and on-call availability to support 24/7 operations.
Demonstrated DoD domain knowledge, including NIPR/SIPR operations, cybersecurity mandates, and mission-critical system support.
