From the first setup on an engine lathe to final checks at the comparator, you’ll shape tooling, fixtures, dies, and production components that keep APT’s operations running. You’ll set up and run engine lathes, mills, grinders, and a range of fabricating and miscellaneous shop equipment. Every task is executed to meet or exceed Customer, AS9100/ISO9001, and regulatory requirements.
Reporting line
This role reports to the Tool Room Supervisor.
What you’ll do
- Build, repair, and refine general tooling, fixtures, and dies that enable our production processes.
- Set up and operate manual machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders) and other shop equipment to produce precise results.
- Respond to tooling and fixture requests from Production, Engineering, Sales, Maintenance, and Machining teams.
- Apply core machining practices using fundamental shop equipment and materials.
- Select materials intelligently by leveraging a practical understanding of properties and applications.
- Use gauges, a comparator, and sound shop practices to verify work and achieve the specified outcome.
- Interpret blueprints with confidence; when needed, create simple prints and produce parts without prints by using sketches or verbal concepts.
- Translate rough ideas and hand sketches into finished, functional tooling.
- Support basic machining needs tied to production work and processes.
- Flex between toolroom tasks and CNC production machining as needed.
- Recommend improvements for tooling applications, fixtures, and processes.
- Be a go-to resource to help others run basic equipment safely and correctly.
What you bring
- High school diploma required.
- Approximately 10 years of general machining experience preferred; Tool & Die or other machinist certifications are a plus.
- Working knowledge of feeds, speeds, and materials to satisfy varied AB and Customer requirements.
- Blueprint expertise: reading, creating, and producing parts even without formal prints.
- High energy, self-starter mindset; results-driven, confident, and well organized.
- Curiosity to learn, flexibility to pivot, and a proactive approach.
Physical requirements and PPE
- Move throughout the shop floor, lift and bend, and stand for extended periods.
- Safety glasses are required while on the shop floor.
